Exclamation 85 300D windshield--Feasible to pull an old one or replace new...

I have a cracked windshield on my 85 300D. I've pulled and replaced windshields on other cars. Is it feasible to replace this one with a used one pulled from a yard?
Or am I better off installing a new one? Has anyone done this and what does it cost.

Probably not worth the trouble to pull one. Mine was $300 plus the seal I replaced for the hell of it. Insurance will normally cover this, check your policy.

You would be better off getting a new one. Old glass is hard to install without breaking as it becomes more brittle with age. And the chances of finding a "perfect" windshield with no scratches or pit marks is small.

But if you have to use the old glass, I recommend you cut away the old rubber with a Stanley knife and install using a new rubber. It will be easier and it will make a better seal.

If you put new and used glass side-by-side, you would be amazed. The gradual degrading of windshields just sneaks up on us. You get new glass and you can't believe how much better you can see. Spring for the new glass. If you windshield was broken by road hazard or such, you may get a new one for free. In some states (including Ky) the insurance companies have to replace your glass with no deductible and cannot hold it against you. This is, of course, providing you have comprehensive coverage.

you can certainly remove and install a used glass being reasonably careful, especially if you've done it before. there's nothing exotic about the MB. Bob is right about new glass - sand pitting constantly makes it worse. If you do use old glass, make sure it's a decent specimen.

I highly recommend using ONLY a Mercedes OE seal. The aftermarket gaskets do not fit as well. Even some dealerships have been known to stock an aftermarket seal (by accident?) you need to look at the tag to see its an MB part. If not, return it! BTDT.

One glass installer I use will not install a MB windshield using aftermarket seals.
If you pay a glass installer for a new window they are responsible if it breaks, no charge to you for a new one. If you buy a used windshield and it breaks, you are going to have to buy another one.
