console wood: how does it attatch?

i can't figure out how the console wood is supposed to be attatched to the console. when i bought the car, it was just loose; nothing holding it down. i puchased used console wood at a junkyard (just needs to be refinished), and i noticed that there is a little black plastic peice that fits into the wood on the underside. that peice was missing on the "new" wood, and the one on the old wood appears to be broken. i have 2 questions: (1) how does the console wood attatch, and (2) can i buy that little plastic peice without having to buy a whole new console wood? thanks in advance.

As far as I can tell, once it's broken it can't be fixed. That piece was broken on my 300D when I bought it. I drilled a small hole in the back of the trim piece and screwed it to the console. The screw head isn't as noticeable as one might think, and it's certainly better than having my console trim sticking up in the back.

If you're talking about the big square piece around the CC and its buttons, mine has 4 pins on the back that go into 4 holes. Screws are a bad idea IMO. 3M Emblem tape is a better idea. If this is the piece you're talking about I can take a picture of the back of mine and post it when I get home (~6pm EST).

Here they are. There's an aluminum plate on the back of the wood. The tabs are part of the plate. You'll notice on the cross section photo that since you do not have the aluminum plate, you have room for double sided adhesive of some sort. 3M Emblem tape would work great, but the downside is you might not be able to get it back off without breaking it. I would probably try regular ol' 2 sided cellophane tape (3M) and see how that goes, only stepping up to better adhesive if required.

Hey, wrong trim piece!

I thought you were talking about the bottom console trim that houses the power window switches. That's the piece that I have a screw in the back of. I don't think I would put any screws in the ACC wood trim.

I don't know about you, but I like spending time in the yards pulling parts that are in better condition than what I might have. (Not too many women walking around carrying a bucket of tools in yards. I get a lot of stares.) Trying my hand at refinishing a few bits here and there. I used a 2 part adhesive to reattach some interior trim. I tried that double sided sticky tape first but the weight of the trim was greater than the strength of the tape. The console trim pieces have tabs. The trim strips (like the one over the glove box) have an adhesive strip that sticks to a plastic backing on the actual wood trim piece. Over time the adhesive dries up and the trim gets loose.
Blueranger: hit a yard over the weekend. haggle with anyone that charges you over $5. Some fool in California tried "letting me have the part for $125.!" I ended up getting those vent pieces for free locally.

I like to put interior panels back on with Velcro. Then if you have to remove it in future it's a cinch. Also allows you to reposition it perfectly unlike contact cement where you only get one shot at it.
