How does the fan clutch work on a 601?
 

I think my brother needs a fan clutch but I don't think it's the hydraulic kind like a 603. He has a plug that plugs into the clutch, ut the clip is broken so it's just each individual wire slid onto the pole. Look at the picture and you'll see what I mean. Would this keep the fan clutch from working correctly? He has the high temps associated with an inop fan clutch. The fan was spinning so slowly at hot idle that I could see and follow each blade with my eyes. I probably could have stuck a finger in and stopped it the fan was going so slow.

This picture was taken with the engine running so the belt will look blurry. Now to top it off, his key won't always leave the off position when trying to start so it looks like he needs a tumbler. Or, I'll probably just take it out then grind the locking portion of it off. He doesn't have the money to throw at this car. The car is cool though sine it's a 5 speed and has power seats! The power seats seem to be as common on a 2.2 as rear adjustable seats are on SDL's.

So, I am speaking about the electrical plug that goes to the fan clutch. My brother doesn't have the plastic surrounding the two wires so each wire is independent of the other, however they're still plugged in if that makes any sense.

i'm guessing it's the same in my 190e 2.3, with a 102 engine. the clutch engages like an a/c compressor would, its magnetically activated depending on temp. if it doesn't engage AT ALL then there's something wrong with either the connection or the solenoid itself. a reversed connection I THINK would also cause the clutch not to engage, since you mentioned that the wires are independent of eachother, very easy to have reversed the connection.

I'll try reversing them then I'll try to see if I can somehow get a reading to see how much power is going to the fan. It's sort of hard with the fan right there spinning if you know what I mean.
