rear brake backing plate replacement? 300D chassis: W123.133

Hope y'all are having a nice weekend

almost ready to road test the 300D after replacement of lower control arm- driver side

I notice the brake backing plate on the new lower control arm is out of sorts- so I wish to swap backing plates

Anyone know procedure- do I have to pull the bearing in the hub to replace - I see you can fit a 7mm hex thru the lug hole to release the 2 hex head nuts that hold the parking brake cable- and there are those 3 ( 8 or 9mm bolts that fasten the backing plate to the hub

if you have knowledge on this and can share it would be appreciated

please and thanks

peace:

backing plate

if you are talking about the dust shield you could easily just straighten it and avoid al ot of work.

d.arch.

not an option- it would take too much to straighten- the ridge the rotor "fits " in just outside where the parking brake shoe sits was crunched- when I test drove today it scrapped something awful

peace:

Take a grinder to it and grind that part away. You don't want to have to get that deep into there for something so stupid. You could easily just cut away part of the backing plate then JB weld a cheap piece of aluminum there or something.

Thanks
David

Answer

To show the difficulty involved in replacing #11 the backing plate/dust shield.
The hub #47 must be removed = forcing you to replace the rear wheel bearing.

If you end up replacing your rear wheel bearings either using the method in the wiki:-

http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123RearWheelBearings

Or this alternative way without hammering the heck out of your car:-

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=277341

Then this is an ideal time to replace a moth eaten brake shield.

You'll also need to get a 7mm allen key for part 23 shown in whunter's attachment in post #5 - this is the first 7mm I've found so far.

Don't forget to get the replacement parts for putting the hub back into place - numbers 41, 44 and 35 for the locking mechanism and the seals numbers 38 and 29 at least. You can get these parts individually but I found it was cheaper just to buy a bearing kit.

it's easier to pull the entire subframe from a parts vehicle, and swap that...

Hallo Mates:

Happy Boxing Day .....

as VStech mentioned - is exactly what I did - I scrounged donor parts from clean South Western w123's as now both my 300TD and 300D turbo both suffered from cancerous rear lower control arms - damn that salt belt rust

cheers:
