Need some quick help with an AC issue

My mom and dad made it into town today from Florida and on the way here they encountered a problem with the AC in their '81 300D. I think there are two problems which reared their ugly head at the same time. First, you only get cold air if the temp dial is in the Max cold position. I believe the fix for this is the temp sensor on the dash...or at least it was on my wife's car. The other problem is they only get air out of the two side vents and the floor vents. My dad and I replaced almost every vacuum pod about a month ago so I do not suspect this to be a pod problem. We just finished swapping out a known good selector switch off of my old car. Need a little help to solve this problem quickly. It was just a little hot here in Houston today and they will need good working AC for the drive home.
