Acktung Bitte!
O.K. instead of starting a lot of threads, again, I'm going to put my questions here:
1. With all injectors firing, with new engine mounts, engine-shocks, and shock-mounts, the IP rack dampener screw adjusted, and with the vacuum system rebuilt, I still have a lot of vibration at idle? 2. How much play should there be in the steering system, c12-20mm? I've adjusted the stearing gearbox adjustment screw and it made a little difference. 3. Where is the relay for the rear window defroster? I've searched the threads to no avail. 4. Where can I find trim pieces, ie. passengers sun visor, wood trim, etc.? 5. What could cause excessive fuel consumption? 6. What would cause intermittent faulty guage readings... either jumping around, or slowly climbing and falling, except the oil guage of course? 7. What kind of maintenance should I do for her 300k service? Being advised that I have no maintenance records for the last 100k miles. 8. And last but not least... does anyone want to buy my car? Just joking .

1. Have you had your injectors tested for spary pattern and pop pressure? (could be related to problem 5) Valves out of adjustment? At 300k miles it could have low compression in one cylinder.
4. Find a parts car or try this site and ebay. If you want new parts the dealer and Phil are the way to go. 5. Lots of things again 300k miles, what is high fuel consumption? What kind of mpg's are you getting? How do you drive? Around town mid to low 20's is about all you are going to get. Lots of people BS big time about mileage with these cars. 6. sounds like bad grounds and conections. 7. Change all fluids and filters, adj valves. Go through the engine and see what is needed. What kind of driving do you do? Does the car smoke? If so what color and when. Does it have good power? Does it start right up?

I have not had the injectors tested, except insuring that they are working.
I guess, based upon your statement, that I get decent milage, c20-30mpg. What kind of driving do I do? Well, I drive her as hard as I can... I'll romp on the accelerator, fly around the freeways, thats why they call them that, right? Maybe I should take it easy on the old girl, and not push her so much. But, I figure, if "its" going to break, than it will if i either drive her hard, or not. She doesn't smoke at all, I have to give her a little push on the accelerator when starting her cold, and she has excellent power, except if I'm going c15-20mph, say when approaching a red light as it changes to green, than the turbocharger doesn't spool up. But if I'm at speed, or starting from a stop, than it spools right up. I think, if I can just fix the little ideosyncracies, or "issues," than she would be a really great car. Post Scriptum. Thanks for the post, also, are you from Cape Hatteras? I love the cape.

Mileage may very!
If your drive like Brian C you will get extremly high mpg numbers. He takes off very slowly and cruises on the highway at 70 a lot. His SDL gets him almost 30mpg. 29.XXX I drive around town and let it shift higher then he does. I also drive much faster on the highway, and I suspect do many more 5k rpm pulls then he does. My SDL gets me about 23-24. I also have 100k more miles on my car and mileage will go down as engine wear increases. If you are getting mid to high 20's out of your 300D with little smoke, I would be happy with those numbers. I like Cape Hatteras a lot as well, heck I will probably move to NC one day. But my screen name comes from Hattares Yachts, my lifelong goal is to own a big one; say a 65-92.

She's still running a little rough, I changed all of the fuel filters, replaced a couple of rubber fuel lines, bled the system well, and gave her one hell of an Italian tune-up...
I guess that her running roughly, and the play in the steerage are my only major concerns now. I've sailed on a few larger boats and owned a few smaller ones. I just like to sail.

At some point you should borrow a diesel compression gauge and carfully check the engine first rather than tinker around. If compression is pretty even than start checking for the problem otherplaces. I have some sloppy steering boxes myself but feel many people miss the fact that rear suspension bushings and bushings in the steering system are very important as well and should be really checked out. Steering collum bushings are a wear item on these cars as well if you look it up in the archives. Was a little dismayed to see a rebuilt steering box was required at 130k on a 86 300sdl up for auction on ebay last week. On that particular car felt the milage posted may have been accurate as all dealer service records up to present were there and they were the original purchasers. 300k is not to be sneezed at but a good used cheap steering box off of a low milage smash or rustout may be worth investigating. I have noticed they come up quite often and are pretty reasonable. Of course the 123 gas car box will be the better choice probably. Hopefully your car only has about 300k as I do not find that I trust any of my odometers on any of the five mercedes I own with the possible exception of one and that one has tight steering and handeling. A good causitive to your problem with the rough idle may be the injection pump itself getting a little off calibration with age and miles if the compression checks out pretty good. Or just the pumps basic timing might be off with age enough to idle rough. Just a few opinions for your consideration.

I'm inclined to agree with Barry on this one.
The engine has 300K on the clock and you have covered all of the easy points. It's time for a compression check to see where the engine is relative to wear. Then, it's time to pull the injectors and bring them to a quality shop to check spray pattern and pop pressure. Finally, if the injectors don't improve the situation, the IP should be taken to a trusted Bosch shop for a bench check and adjustment. After 300K on the clock, I would not be at all surprised to see the pump put out varying fuel quantities on all cylinders due to uneven wear. You need to realize that it might not be possible to get an engine with 300K on the clock to run perfectly unless you spend a bit of money on it. |

Have you checked the timing chain for stretch?

It may not be worth it, if it runs decent drive it until it blows. What about timing? The chain probably has a bit of stretch in it.

I did the same to mine. It did'nt smooth out until I had the injection pump timing set.
