slow 85 diesel

Just bought a 85 diesel on Ebay. Drove it home abour 300 miles. It is anice car, everything works. Just slow as hell. I cleaned the banjo thing on the intake manifold, changed the oil, fuel filters. I have attempted to look at the ALDA thing. I see no adjustment screw or I am looking at the wrong thing. This is a 300 TD. If that is the right nomenclature. All of the things I already did have made a difference. Not sure which one really mattered of course. So, is it necessary to clean the other banjo thing from the firewall to the ALDA? It looks much cleaner.

Sounds like your on the right track. Adjust the valves, italian tune up, then touch up the alda. Its got a cap over the adjustment screw if its never been touched. The banjo fitting at the ALDA stays much cleaner.

The "TD" is a wagon. "T" indicates "touring" not turbo.

Maybe we need to define slow - have you driven a 200, 300 Series diesel before? With a stopwatch time your 0 - 60 performance. You have started to attack the most common and cheapest problems. How does the air filter look?

Oh and Welcome! It's a great idea to put your location on your signature. Never know when you might find a top notch neighbor to give you a hand.

For a start you have a 125 HP engine hauling a 4000+ pound car. For another thing diesels are sluggish off the line.

If it's a dog away from stop lights but runs down the hiway OK there may be nothing wrong with it. I assume you can pull away from lights fast enough not to slow down traffic or cause people to honk at you.

Sounds pretty normal but adjusting the ALDA will help some. Mine was slow off the line to start with until it hit 2,200 rpm, then it took off. Now after an ALDA adjustment it takes off pretty good and much smoother at about 1,500 rpm, cleaning the banjo bolt and the hoses from it all the way to the ALDA helps a lot too.

fixed. mostly

I bypassed the whatever it's called valve on the firewall that goes to the ALDA thing. Runs like a scalded dog, actually chirped the tires into second. SO, I either need a new whatever valve or can I just leave it bypassed without too much worry? I also adjusted the ALDA out a half turn but didn't really notice too much there. It is actually fun to drive now and I may keep it. THanks, bryan

You might merely need to clean that unit as some crap might be plugging it up.
It might also be time to replace it.
I believe it is referred to as a overboost bypass valve.
Sounds like yours isn't sending the signal through when it is supposed to
