Found a '79 Euro TD, what could it be worth?

I came across a '79 Euro model 300TD non turbo with 187K miles on it a few days ago. It's been sitting for about 5 years and may be running according to the owner. Its in fair shape, some minor rust at the back side bottoms of the rear wheel wells. It probably has more rust but I didn't pull the rugs nor look under it. Its been in the Portland area since about the early 80's so it might not have a serious rust issue. The paint is faded no dents, the interior looked like it was in good shape but smelled musty from moisture. I don't remember if its an automatic or stick.
I'd like to give him an offer but I don't feel its worth much in the condition its in. Any ideas? I didn't have my camera along to take any pics.

It's about a 1-1/2 hours trip from where I live so I probably won't go see it again unless I have an offer in mind. I'm trying to get it cheap without offending the owner too much. I know he wants to just get rid of it.

He wants me to make him an offer which is why I started the thread. AFAIK, I was always told that W123 Euro models were worth less than our US models.

How much is it worth to YOU ?
That is what counts..
That is pretty funny... you don't want to offend him TOO much.. some is ok.. but not TOO much... LOLOL
Why not go for getting the bragging rights to the best deal this year and not worry about offending him ? If you shoot low you can raise your bid... but if you shoot high and he jumps up and down in joy... you will not be able to lower it... and you will always wonder just how low you could have gone and still gotten it....

Remember... although it seems like there are a lot of us around because we are bunched up on this forum together.... there are not actually a lot of people who want to mess with these particular old cars....

You have to decide if this is a Mercedes purchase.. or a joy of bargain hunting experience....both are exciting... when they can be combined they are exquisite...

I drove my 1980 240d home from Arlington for $500.... stick shift, manual windows , manual AC controls, no sunroof... everyone just shakes their head when they see it...

I'd like to get the car for a few hundred bucks considering the amount of work and $$$ I'll probably end up having to dump into the thing to make it a driver. Also my wife has to agree to letting me get it so I can't spend too much.

Extremly good reasons for shooting low in the beginning... and like being smart in an auction... have a cutoff point you won't go above before starting out... just walk away if he won't go for it... let him try finding another fool...I mean Mercedes afficianado.... to buy it from him... LOL

bargaining

always be friendly... in this case cheerfully asking how bad his wife wants it out of the yard might be a good starting place. then go right to $50 if that doesnt work and work up from there. if it can be made to run it would be worth a lot more. just for the motor. an unrunning rusty musty car is not worth much. several hundred is enough....plenty. good luck.

Odd as to why that may be. They have the same adverse conditions as we do here in North America.

I do have every intent to be polite with the seller.

If you want a RUST FREE, non running Euro 123, I have an '84 240D, stick and an '80 Euro 240D stick parts car to go with it. I would sell them both as a package, but would not split them up. $3000 for both of them.

Good luck,

Larry,

$3000 for a non running 123 MB. Even with a parts car it sounds kinda high to me. You should at least get it running for a test drive.

P.E.,

Yes, that's a lot of money. It's one of those deals where if someone really wants them, I'll let them go. If not, maybe I'll get around to restoring ol' silver someday.

Take care,
