I emailed the guy & mentioned that I thought 85 300Ds came with 5 cyls only -- he replied that it is a Euro model only ......... possible that this is true, or just blather on his part ??

I think he might be correct. I'm thinking it's a W124 with a 603 in it. The manual windows and manual sunroof are the tipoff.

the extra cyl was available in 1985 as an add-on. It was placed in california emissions cars as well, horizontally, on the passenger side of the engine bay. Mercedes acknowledged the foolishness of this extra cylinder, and issued a recall, replacing it for free with another, smaller cylinder.

most of the time, people call the extra cylinder a trap oxidizer. It's not desireable.
