Unhappy is my tranny slipping ?

my 87 300d turbo is doing something that concerns me , if I'm doing 60 or so at a slight incline and stomp on the "gas" , the boost comes rushing in and the car starts to take off and the engine will soon be at 3000 rpm but vehicle speed struggles to "catch up" with the engine and eventually gets there, it equalizes, it doesn't take forever, maybe a few seconds but I think this shouldn't happen with a lockup torque converter it makes me think the trasn is slipping. Any ideas?

I am not sure but I would assume they do, I had an 84 pontiac phoenix that had a lockup converter, I would assume a mb would've had years earlier, I know assumption is not the way to do things but I also recall seen it somewhere, maybe am wrong. But if there's no lockup converter I can see there been a difference in speeds.

no lockup

my book shows no reference to a lockup function. the lockup converters tended to cause problems so that is prob why mb didnt use them.

actually the mb tranny is very similar to the early fifties and sixties gm hydromatic, which was one of the ruggedest and most durable automatics ever made. they didn t have alockup function either.

in the sixties the hot setup in the fuel altered drag cars was a b & m modified gm hydromatic. they put them behind blown hemis etc. about bulletproof.

i used to have early 50's caddies and when i observed how the mb automatics shifted i often thought that they felt a lot like the caddies trannies. many years later i read that when mb built their first auto they took a gm hydro apart and copied the best parts.

The reason I believe its a lockup converter is because I feel 3 upshifts which would correspond to 2nd to 3rd , 3rd to 4th and the converter locking up since I believe the 124 300d's also start in second gear which is a shame, when I hit the gas in reverse on this car I get a feel for what first gear must be like starting off since they are a similar ratio I believe, it just leaps, really hard

A locking torque converter means that upon the transmission shifting into the last gear, 4th/overdrive etc..., it either at the same time or shortly after that shift locks the torque convertor so that there is no slippage between the engine side and transmission side. The only reason for this is that it can increase efficiency and reduce heat-output by removing that constant "slipping" that is present in a non-locking torque converter. I doubt you can even feel the torque converter lock up as it likely does it during the 3-4 shift. So those three shifts would corespond to 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4/lockup. I don't know if the '87 300D has a lockup converter, but I know none of the ones before it including the sdl did, so its unlikely that the 87 300d has one. Also all of the diesels start off in 1st, its only the gassers that start off in 2nd. My SD can nearly chirp the tires if I floor it in reverse, but it can't in 1st forward gear. I'm pretty sure the reverse gear is a slightly higher ratio than first gear.
