Will be checking this 300D tomorrow

ebay Item number: 4558543121

Any suggestions? I never checked a near mint car before so any tips on what to look for will be greatly appreciated.

This seller thinks the vehicle is so excellent that he does not need to bother with posting a description. He simply suggests that you have your mechanic look at the vehicle because his list would be "too long".

So, he had therefore represented nothing regarding it's mechanical condition other than the compression.

Therefore, you should thoroughly check every single operating function to see what works and what does not work.

Make sure the transmission shifts properly without any flaring.

See if anything has been replaced in the front end. It could be all original and require some parts by now.

Overall, it does show well in the photos. Therefore, you must be extra prudent when you go to see it.

He certainly has rigid payment requirements, possibly due I guess to past problems, but his verbage just doesn't give me a warm fuzzy.....

This part bothers me:

"Air conditioner will be serviced before the end of the auction"

That means it is currently blowing hot air. A prime target for a quick shot of junk refrigerant.

A 79 would have the evil servo type climate control. Make sure both AC and heat work correctly. Check around the evil servo for signs of leakage.

Otherwise, it looks vey nice overall.

Thanks for the tips, my list on what to look for just keeps growing, any idea how much it will be worth if it's as described?
I contacted a pre purchase inspection mechanic, but he can't check the car until Saturday after 3:00 pm so I think I will be there today and if I like the car I will be back on Saturday with some help. I will keep you guys posted
Thanks again.

It does look like a nice example with an actual 105,000 miles, IMO.

checked the car this afternoon

I went to take a look at the car this afternoon, boy let me tell you guys I just fell in love with the MB it’s a lot better than described. I had to wait for my turn another guy was there with his Indy, the car was on car stands (the front wheels) and the Indy was finishing his report I ask him about the condition of the car he just look at me and told me it’s ok, so obviously he was not able to say nothing since the guy that hire him to check the car was there. I tried to look for a phone # or a business name on his truck but it had nothing on it.
Well I made an offer, but the owner wants to let the auction decide the final price, the guy (with the report on his hand) made an offer also but was rejected, so I will bid on it and hope to get it I really like the car.

That is mistake #1.

Do not fall in love with a rolling piece of metal. It has all kinds of things wrong with it and you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Furthermore, you are setting yourself up for overpayment. Decide, right now, what is a fair price for the vehicle and do not exceed it.

Did you go over the vehicle yourself and check on all the items mentioned above? What doesn't work? How's the front suspension? How's the transmission?

Don't consider marriage until you know what you are getting into.

Is the tube off the air cleaner a owner mod ? It look like it is run down beside the engine by the power steering pump. The valve cover vent usually goes into the valve cover doesn't it ?

"Do not fall in love with a rolling piece of metal. "--Brian

Why did you not tell me that EARLIER ?

At age 15 bought a 1947 Ford Coupe... no engine ... I owned NO tools....

age 16 bought a 1936 Ford pickup... 48 Merc flathead v8 ...finned aluminum heads and 5 (no typo) Strombergs mounted in a straight line..no brakes that worked.. the ones that were on it were mechanical.. !

while in college fell in love with a 1957 XK 140 fixed head Coupe... Lucas electrics.... and rust... need I say more ? oh, yes, had US, Metric, AND WHITWORTH threads scattered about randomly...

same deal with a 1934 Plymouth Coupe (one owner)...but only $1300 in 1974 !
Rear end was grinding...

Each had mechanical problems beyond my abilities, time , money and tools at the time... after I got them home and started working on them not one every left the yard under their own power....
But I fell in love with their LOOKS.....

A little California perspective if I may. There are a LOT of good looking W123's to be found out here. What I see in the photos is a pretty well detailed car with new tread. Caution. My W123 looks that good, perhaps better, and has excellent compression numbers too. However a good MB mechanic could easily find $$$ worth of stuff it needs. Bushings, subframe mounts, front end work, steering box, door check straps, etc.... Mileage means nothing. It is a 26 year old car. To paraphrase the old Lorne Green ALPO ad: That's 135 to you and me. Yes we are all preaching, but only because we care. Just be careful.

When I took it for a test drive it feels solid, no rattles the steering feels like a newer car, the auto trans shifts very smooth the suspension feels right, also it’s a little bit faster than I tough, but anyway I will be back on Wednesday with a MB mechanic (the only day I can do this), then after having his mechanical evaluation I will make my final decision
Thanks again for the advice.

I noticed that one has been reposted as well. Might just unload both 240d's for something faster Is a vehicle like that worth $4000?

Looks like it was repainted but they missed the bumper area below the tail light.
