1993 300D Fan doesn't stop right away

When I shut the engine off, the Fan keeps spinning for a while after shut off. In turn, sounds like the engine is kind of still running. I have had the Fan Clutch replaced in the past, just curious as to whether or not this may need another replacement...if so, do any other model Merc's use the same Fan Clutch?

thanks...
Mario

any body??? anything??? please???

I believe another method by which you can check fan clutch failure is to see if you can spin the fan blade freely after the engine has sat cold overnight. If it spins with no resistance, the clutch is bad. As far as getting a new one, search ebay.

Be careful with this, many of the Mercedes fan clutches look similar but are model-specific. The only interchangeability I found is below:

1990-1993 300D's
1992 and 1993 300SD's

That's not to say there might not be others, but be careful.... you don't want to drop big bucks on the wrong fan clutch. Why do you want to use a fan clutch from another model anyways?

noise underhood post engine "shutoff"

GH80,

I suspect that even if your V fan clutch were totally shot "IT" would stop
rotating within 1or2 rpm's.

?Could you be hearing the ELECTRIC fan(s) [in front of the Radiator/Condensor]?

Hint...Run the engine until hot , shut it off (BUT, first open the hood) and
listen to where the sound is coming from.

I am not conversant with the electric fan relay setup on this model(EVEN
though I own one)

BUT

Many of today's (a 12 year old 'Benz is so far advanced, technology speaking
that it qualifies)cars electric fans (accessory) will continue to spin until the
engine temps fall below a preset level.

compress,

this is definately not the same thing as the fan just running to cool the engine...when that happens, the engine and car are completely off...

my issues, engine remains on until it sputters to a complete stop...

looked at the fan and it moves easily when the engine is off...

Are you saying that your engine is having trouble shutting off as well? I don't think this has anything to do with the fan clutch, more like the fuel shutoff valve or your vacuum (if vacuum controls fuel shutoff on your model). Your fan clutch you should replace if bad, no doubt, but this is something different I believe.

My engine driven fan (with the clutch) stops spinning after 2 or 3 revolutions of the fan after turning the engine off. I have never heard the auxiliary fans run once the ignition is shut off, no matter what the engine temp. My Audi does keep the fan on sometimes if it is hot enough, but the MB doesn't seem to do that.

My car is a 91 300D 2.5.

i have pinpointed this problem to be the vacuum controlled shut off valve...the STOP lever on the side of the engine...

i popped open my hood and then shut the car off at the key...i then went into the engine bay and pressed down on the STOP lever, it was already down, but not all the way...

any idea of how to fix this???

thanks...

Time to hit the search button. Lots of good info here. This is a topic you really want to read up on. See the threads about "run away engine" as to why.
