Rebuilt turbo for a 606?

I am posting this for my friend, (W140 S600) the turbo on his car is in the process of dieing. The bearings seem to be failing and you can hear the blades hitting the housing. This must be a fluke, the turbo's on these cars usually last a long time. His has just a tick over 155k on it. His car has had regular Mobil 1 changes its entire life.

So has anyone gotten their turbo done yet? I asked Phil for a quote but are there any other places? Any idea on cost?

I'd like to do the seals on the Garrett out of the SD. One of those comprehensive kits on e-bay was about $100.

All the proper rebuild shops get upwards of $350.

There is a post somewhere here that states exactly how to rebuild it and what parts are required. I remember the price being under $50 I believe. Do a search under my name and under the field turbo rebuild and see what you can come up with. I'll do it now and report back.

Thanks
David

Sorry, I forgot that someone else had told me to do a search. Anyways, I guess it may be more than $50 but this thread will tell you all about rebuilding one.

Thanks
David

I'd be interested to know what you find out Hattie.. Although mine works ok, I think it is a little too noisy and passes a little too much oil.

Hey,
Here are some links from my subscribed threads:

Well I only had that one. I remember the post with the parts list. I thought I had it but I don't.

Phil quotes $829 for a rebuilt turbo. Part number # 606096009988.

Glad it isn't my money. He already called a local shop and they know of no place in CT that does them, they send them out of state.

How hard are they to rebuild yourself? Can you get the bearings out? Since his blades are hitting the housing he probably should replace the turbine as well.

I have seen turbos let go on big diesels and they can fire a blade through the housing! Usually what is left is sucked into the engine and spit out.

Edit just looked at a few threads, hmm he has some reading to do. The problem with rebuilding it yourself is you need to make sure the fan is perfect and you have to keep it in balance.

Here's the post with the parts list:

Do a search for Garrett or kkk. I'm sure I read in a post somewhere about a drop in replacement for about $500.

my local machinist did mine. the kit was about $100, BUT did not include new mounting gaskets. two bushings to push out and two or three seals. very simple devices. dont bend the blades though!

turbo

was on a 617 motor...actually getting it on and off the car was the trickiest part... the seals on the oil return line were a pita!!!! took it on and off three or four times, i seem to remember.

My turbo is starting to make more unpleasant noise now and I'm starting to explore options. It also has a small amount of side to side play. I know my turbo is a KKK, but I can't find a model number on it other than an MB part number. Does anyone know what KKK model it is? Can any other bigger turbo bolt in without modification?

Your friend has a W140 S600 with a turbo? Can't be from the factory.

The W140, which happens to be a S600, is owned by the father of the friend (W140 S600). It does not have a turbo.

The vehicle in question is a 606 with a turbo, owned by the friend (W140 S600), who is also a member here, and uses the handle of his father's vehicle.

Seems simple, right.

You learn something everyday... but this isn't one I'll retain.

I'd go for an exhcange reman or new unit if the blades are hitting the housing just to be rid of the potentially unbalanced rotating assembly. I sure hope it's the turbine blades not the compressor blades touching the housing. Who knows what aluminum scrapings can do to the combustion chamber.

The worst part of a DIY turbo rebuild is handling the razor sharp wheels. Those things have an appetite for fingers.
