My MB pickup truck (pics)
As much as I hate to do it, sometimes my 84 300SD becomes very utilitarian and doubles as a pick up truck. This weekend's trip to Home Depot resulted in 8 bags of garden soil and 10 bags of mulch (all very big bags) and 25 small plants. I was able to get about six bags of mulch in the trunk, most of the garden soil on the floor boards of the back seat (front seats moved up), and the rest stacked in the back seat.
As you will see the car is really weighted down, but surprisingly for the couple of mile trip back to the house at 50 mph the car didn't seem to car of feel unstable. Quite the versatile car!

That car is too dignified to be hauling manure or whatever you bought at Home Depot/Lowes.
Go buy a $500 used pickup for those trips. No Benz deserves to haul around dirt. Just my $0.02. |

Use your car for whatever you d*** well please. It's your car. Besides, wagons are specifically built to haul stuff, and the big trunk in the SD can fit a great deal. Construction projects, sports equipment, engine parts, camping gear, etc. The back seat holds plenty of kids/dogs.

right on, Bodyart!
Why fire up the F-250 6.9 just to take a couple of studs home?
You can fit 2 x 4 x 8 footers diagonally INSIDE the cabin of a W123 4-door. Recline the passenger seat back and load from the driver's rear door. You can't do that in a Crown Vic. Sort of like having a kiln-dried roll cage.

they do well on long trips
couple years back i filled the benz in florida with all my son's stuff from the college dorm room and i mean filled - every inch of space upto to the headliner
including the passenger seat and trunk was filled. i have no idea how much weight it was in total but can say 'a lot' . boxes, mini fridge, microwave, couple of monitors, tv, etc etc. anyhow the car performed like a champ all the way to Ct - 1400 miles. it seemed to get no worse fuel economy either.

We sometimes call the SD "the truck", we can haul a good couple of bags of planting soil, lawn fertilizer (not cow dodo, the other stuff) and look good while doing it.

The SD's are big but like other Benzes they could benefit from a folding back seat. I would say my fiancee's '93 Honda Accord is the ultimate pickup. Last weekend we fit in two 8-ft trees, a big bag of decorative bark and a few tree stakes and still had some room left. Another day we were transporting 15 10-ft pipes. Who needs a pickup truck.

Its a car not a TEMPLE. Just sheetmetal and tires and wires and cast iron. Good engineering, sure and quality control--but its just a car.

While you may do as you please with your vehicle please take heed: Hard and heavy items in the passenger compartment will definitely injure you and likely kill you in the event of an accident at any decent speed. Its just not smart. As much as people on this board don't think towing a trailer is a good idea with a MB this is the perfect application IMHO. Much safer to have a small trailer outside loaded with stuff than the cargo inside with you. RT
