Injection pump
having loos of power problems in my 83 300dt. myself and my mechanic ruled almost everything out. He's thinking at long last an injection pump. What can I expect as far as $ and how difficult is the replacement?

No other details about the problem, or are they on another thread? Where is your mechanic located? Do they know these engines well?
Loss of power can be caused by a lack of regular valve adjusts, plugged line to the ALDA, plugged fuel filter(s), dirty strainer in the fuel tank and a few other possibilities including possibly bad injectors then its time to look at the IP. You may be in for a surprise at the cost of a rebuilt IP. $600 last time I checked. Forget a new one, you'd have to shell out more than a car would be worth. Now that the moeny factor is out of the way, try stopping in at Pacific Fuel Injection on Utah St. in South SF, ask Gus to listen to the engine, provided its running well enough to get over there! He's is often closed for lunch, better call first.

IPs don't commonly wear out from what I've read. If it's a fuel starvation issue, check the lift pump.
If the car idles ok and runs in town ok at lower speeds but slows at highway speeds especially on hills, like mine, also check for dragging brakes and/or full accelerator linkage travel. I really hope it's not the IP in your case since your problem is so similar to mine.

Have you replaced the fuel filters and checked to ensure that fuel draws easily from the tank?
Good luck, |

have you made sure you don't have a restriction on the engine breather/oil seperator...
Ask me how I spent 4 months chasing a power loss problem and almost $1k in part to a simple restriction that cost nothing to fix.

try this
On the old 240D you can check the beginning of delivery of 1st cylinder then check the beginning of delivery of 4th cylinder if beginning of delivery deviates by more than 2 degrees your in trouble and need to remove your pump and have it repaired.

82 300dt powerlosscont.
German auto works is the name of the shop in Walnut Creek, CA. they know the car type and engines. Filters replaced, wastegate checked, turbo hose replaced. altitude compensator adjusted, throttle full travel checked all ok. Mechanic kinda a t a loss wants me to try a better grade of fuel with another dose of additive. This seams very passive to me but think he's trying to save me some $. He says that it could be a lot things and its kinda a guessing game as far as replacing one thing then another. Have to check the lift pump, poss. plugged line to the ALDA and engine breather. Thanks for all your suggestions, not sure how to check that stuff myself but at least I can double check my mechanic and don't sound to stupid when I go in there. Wish I could find someone who could teach me to fix my diesel. love the car. Thanks again.

Try your primer pump...if its the screw on kind unscrew it and pump a few strokes with the engine off. Is it leaking? If it is replace it right now with a new upgraded type. Anything that can leak fuel out WILL suck air under load. An air leak can cause you a loss of power under load.
I speak from personal experience there.
