Question Alternator on the way out????

I have begun to hear a whine that rises and drops with engine rpm. At first, I thought could this be the torque converter making this sound, or maybe the turbo? The sound seems to be coming from the alternator, but without having disconnected the serpentine belt in order to render the alternator motionless, I'm not fully sure!

Is this typical of an alternator, and or, regulator and it's brushes, to make this sound when it's getting ready to check out?

Use an old broomhandle (or other hardwood stick) to identify the source of the noise. Put one end to your ear and the other end to somewhere you think the noise is coming from. Then move it around. A plastic air tube works good too.

Miigt be the bearings, but the brushes don't make any noise. Your accessories like windows and wipers get weak when the brushes wear down.

You might be able to find it with Petes poor boy stethoscope. I've used one many times.

The only way to know for sure is remove the belt and spin the accessories. Make it a habit that ANY TIME the belt is off spin ALL rotating items to make sure they are free and smooth.

Good luck,
