For those of you who notice these things, you may remember me as the person slowly working towards rebuilding mthe motor in my 79 300TD...

Anyhow, I am getting ready to start on this project, and I am trying to make sure I have all my ducks lined up before I start tearing things apart, which brings me to my current question...

Can anyone tell me what the size of the 12 point cylinder head bolts are? They appear to be 12mm, but I dont have the valve cover off yet so I cant check, and I wasnt able to find an answer in the book yet. (123 CD-ROM is on the way!) I want to order this tool but I dont want to get the wrong size! Also, can anyone verify the Hazet or MB tool number for this tool?

Also, do I need to buy the timing chain installation tool, or is there an acceptable workaround? I found one at http://www.samstagsales.com, but it is $212. I dont mind spending the money if it is really the best way, but on the other hand, if there is an equally good alternative, that would be ok.

Also, if anyone has these or any other appropriate diesel tools for sale used, I might be interested...

Thanks!

-Zach

The MB part No. for the 12 point socket needed to remove your cylinder head is:617 589 00 10 00. You can get one from Baum Tools Unlimited Sarasota, Fl. 34277-5867.
I bought one last summer for about $18 including ship&hand. It is the exact same tool you can get from your MB dealer, but a lot less money.
A crimping tool for installing the timing chain can be rented for $20. If you need more information, let me know. Glad to help.

I forgot to give the phone No. for Baum Tools. It is 1-800-848-6657. This is the same tool that your MB dealer will sell to you but at an enflated price. It is made in Germany by Stahlwille.Snap-on tools are good but a little on the expensive side.I own some snap - on tools, but most of mine are Sears Craftsman.
