Defrost, lack of
Larry Bible &/or other Euro owners ---- assuming that the Euro designation makes a difference --- how should I have the air controls set so as to maximize defrost on my '84 Euro 240D? In rainy weather -- rather prevelant here in SW Florida -- I often have to use the AC to get enough demisting to keep the windshield clear. No combination of settings I have tried makes much of an air flow that I can reach up & feel with my hand. I have the manual controls. Any advice on this is welcome as I have no owner's manual & don't really know what the 2 sets of slides control (as I don't get big blasts of air anywhere no matter what I do). Contrary to what I have read here, I do get AC out the center vents ..... Are there parts that might have gone bad -- flexible ducts, say, that would be leaking air? My '58 Chrysler put out enough air to part your hair, I seem to remember.
Second question --- is the Euro fan switch a Euro - only - part? An AC shop I had take a look (only high speed works) was very dubious about trying to replace it. My next project will be to be sure I have R12 as I need a charge anyhow & have read the posts about 134 not working well with the stock condensor. I don't use it all the time, even during the summer (and in my last 2 cars it didn't work at all), but AC is really nice to have here in steamy Florida. Thanks for the help. Ed |

i have a 79 us model 240D and to get the defrost to work i usually turn the a/c on cold and open the middle vents(the lever in the wood trim) to make the air work.
for a while i thought that closing the dash vents made the defrost better, but it cuts the defrost air off too! the dash controls should have either DEF or an arrow pointing upwards, change the slider to that position and you should be set! if the a/c system does not have refrigerant in it, i would think the demisting would be less successful, outside air directed at an already misty window wont do you any good! thats why modern(ish) cars turn on the air conditioner to dehumidify the air, it wastes gas, but makes it work! |
