Vaccuum problem, this just happened to me as well, likely one of your hoses just came loose under the hood. Check the DIY files sticky for a picture of what it should look like and compare, it was very obvious what came loose for me.

engine wont quit

U need to look under the hood, go to injection pump. There is a lever for accelerating, if u push back ward it should stop the engine. Forward increase throttle.
Sounds like one of your main vac line had worked itself loose. Lucky that u still have power brake, as PB runs off the vac too.
Just trace every vac lines, see any loose or dangling, worse scenario u need to bring it to a MB shop , should only take 10 mins for someone who knows, and 20 hrs for someone who doesn't know.

I knocked a line off while working on my radio and had the same problem. I also at one time had a shut off valve leak. Door locks worked with that leak, did not with the knocked off line. I would look for a line that is disconnected

I have the same problem. I'm beginning to think my great mechanic isn't so great. Trying to learn this stuff myself so I can be spared the embarassment of my car shuddering for 10 seconds after I turn the key off. Oh, and then having to manually lock all the doors.

The most common cause of this problem is someone knocking vacuum lines loose near the oil filter at oil change time.

Good luck,
