can oil weep on the IP side of engine?
in a 603, the oil passages on the head are on the exhaust side right?
i just installed the head, and it seems there is a little bit of oil along the headline... I do have an oil leak where i drilled through the head to remove the guiderail pins... its leaking down around the #1 glowplug area, the oil may be travelling along the ridge? So, if that's not it... is it possible to leak oil on the IP side of the engine? should i retorque the head bolts? the car starts instantly so i guess i don't have a compression leak... and i'm thinking if the head isn't tight enough causing an oil leak along the gasket... wouldn't performance suffer big time? coz right now the car runs perfectly... starts instantly, and doesn't appear to be consuming huge amounts of oil... though its only been about a week since i started it up... |
Did you replace the intake manifold gasket? Try tightening the hex bolts that fasten each port. They will leak there if not tight, try it and you'll see! Mine still leaks a bit, even though it does have a new gasket, so don't worry about it too much! Also, injectors tend to weep too. Do you have new rubber hoses that connect for the diesel fuel return. Often times diesel fuel can look and feel like black engine oil!

thanks for the reply,
yep i have all the gaskets covered... no its not leaking from the intake, nor the injectors, well not at the moment that is. :) i just sealed up the hole i mentioned with silicon. sprayed the area with degreaser. i will monitor the leak and see if it returns. IF it does, what do you recommend? retorque? |
I use ether, or starting fluid, it's cheap, to clean oily grease off the engine. Once clean, oil leaks will show there origins.
The head torque bolts are stretch type and some will say they are good for only one torquing. Did you go by the book on torquing? |
yep, i torqued to the letter... 2 settings, a 90* turn, wait 10 minutes, another 90*...

possible leak
Hi,
I have a 123 diesel and it leaked from the gasket between the oil filter and the engine block. I just tightened the filter and it stopped. I don't know if the 124 uses the same cartridge type filter in the big can on the IP side of the engine as the 123. I found it by cleaning and cleaning and cleaning then observing. Walmart sells degreaser for $0.93/big can. Good luck, Yoko |
Mine did something similar, found it to be a fuel leak that just looked like an oil leak. Of course, I had already replaced the valve cover gasket...grr

yep, i tried cleaning and cleaning and cleaning too. :)
i think i've isolated the leak to that hole i mentioned. i plugged that up with silicone and so far the leak is gone. :) i'll keep watching out for oil leaks |
