Your heart will break when you go to the Salvage/Crushing Yard...

I was at the salvage yard, turning in my old engine and transmission--thats trash you just cant leave at the curb or put down the insinkerator...
Either there is a big recycling push on or the price of scap steel has gotten more lucrative..you can get $270 for a car if you crush it, I was told. A lot of junkyard owners are finding it more lucrative to crush cars, some that still run and would make decent transpo for a low income family or a teenager.
To make a short story long, I saw them crush a beautiful Gray 85 300D with a shot motor and a nice interior yesterday..the guy just laughed, he said, he had done several last month, one that still ran....My indy has an extra one with a dead motor--I may just buy it as a parts car before they all disappear..
From a practical standpoint, its good that they recycle steel and old cars, I mean you can't save EVERYTHING..but I thought that only applied to Yugo's and rusted shells...

Scrap iron is at a premium these days. Seems the Chinese can't get enough of it. You ought to price out stainless steel pipe and plate - the price on that changes DAILY or so it seems.

I make things from steel.

The cost of standard SAE 1020 steel has doubled over the past year.

The cost of typical SAE 4140 alloy steel seems to be "anything the market will bear". Some 4140 tubes cost upwards of $4.00 per pound

yeah

many building materials have taken 40% hikes in the last year. things that have been stable about forever. certain electrical items have tripled.

a hidden cost of the iraq war.

a big part of the inflation we are now experiencing, along with the increase in fuel costs.

I know what you mean. I was just at my local place yesterday- the 123 280E they had got not too long ago was already gone. The interior was actually decent on it and I had fired it up when I had first seen it, and it ran well too, albeit no exhaust. There was a cherry 300E there as well thats been there awhile that was missing its head. I had made him promise awhile back not to crush it- he said the other day he was going to sell the car as a whole now, but still let me get the cornermarker and taillight I needed from it

He also has had a 250S and a burgundy 87 300D thats just showed up. He told me I'm not allowed to touch the 300D yet Its complete with tags still on it, I wonder whats wrong with it...

Just so they know they're not allowed to crush any more mercedes as long as I'm still around. For $75 yesterday I got a TON of parts I needed for that "two tone" 300SD I got from ebay a few weeks back, plus the W124 parts as well. New black trunk liner set, instrument cluster, seat switches, all outer window trim (was new on the wrecked SD), the rear glass chrome trim (over $200 for this new) and much much more...
I'm tempted to go back there an get the black dash out of it. The brown one in this car has some cracks, but even worse,it's BROWN!

iraq

i perhaps should say it clearly. the reason these building materials and steel are up is that we are sending shiploads of materials to iraq to build bases for our troops there.

i am not saying that this is necessarily wrong, but the true cost of the war there is not being talked about.

there is the obvious cost of having our men and women there and the costs of munitions and food and fuel etc... but a huge cost in inflation of the things that we need here to carry on day to day life.

......man, I knew that war was costing us in every other aspect, but now it's taking our supply of parts car benzes too??! We should have just left the Middle East well enough alone.

I feel your pain.

Every time I go on a parts run to one of the local pull-a-part yards, I just want to save them all! I always see all kinds of good, straight, rust-free body panels, interior parts, suspension components, etc..... Stuff that people could use, but I don't have the time or facilities to part them all out. I wish I could buy almost every one of them, put them on a flatbed semi truck and take them home!

yup.... i had that happen when my fav. parts yard was closing down. this place had over 500 mercedes in their yard. everytime i went i was like a kid in a candy store. i sat in everyone of those cars looking at all of the differences in them. when they closed they crushed all but 100 cars. it was so sad lookin at the stacks of smashed cars. they smashed all of the 50s,60,and 70s cars and alot of the 80s and 90s. when i asked if i could take little things off the smashed ones like relays and stuff they told me no. i took a few little things that were in the dirt like emblems and badges that were being smashed and thrown away. that was the best parts yard besides the fact that the owner was an a***ole and thought all of his parts were gold plated. i wish i could have taken a picture and posted it.

friend of mine had 60 MBs in his back field just last year, he's got ten now, he sold them to a guy for $75.00 each for scrap. I went for a walk down back before he junked them, I almost cryed, car after car, thousands of parts gone forever, I asked him why? he responded"Don't make me talk about it ,I'm just as sick as you but the town was on my ass to clean it up and the price was good so I just have to let them go. He has been collecting them since 69. steve 83sd

sickness

we all suffer from the take the homeless puppy in syndrome... except we do it with old cars. i am 56 and ive been doing this for 40 years now. and with the lower energy levels that one experiences with age, the urge is less... but it is still there. i see an old car sitting by the road and i say to myself (not out loud in front of my long suffering wife) " I bet i could get that running".

i have dragged home too many hulks, fixed them up real good, and sold them real cheap!

just remember when you get the urge...IT IS ALWAYS EASIER TO BUY THEM THAN IT IS TO SELL THEM"

that is why i have two perfectly nice mercedes too many and an extra suburban. (for sale cheap).
