couple hours reading in search mode - must have

missed it. My '81 300SD give me a clickity/ratchety sound from somewhere underneath, coasting, with foot off the go pedal, in gear. Sound goes away when neutral is selected while coasting. Any ideas?

It's kinda like that sound but it's from underneath & I think

to the rear. I don't think that cable stops in neutral while coasting?? Seems to be associated with driveshaft/wheel rotation - but neither of those stop while rolling. This noise is not loud and I can only hear it with alll the window up, radio off,AC off('course that is with almost 71yr old ears....).

If the sound is coming from the rear of the car it may be a nick on the pinoin. Mine did that but drove it anyway.

Sure sounds like a CV joint. Especially true if it is more of a clunking sound, sometimes even a click click thump click......
Try this to test it.
1. APPLY PARKING BRAKE
2. Get assistant
3. Start engine.
4. Get in a safe position so you can look at the cv joints
5. Have assistant move gear selector from drive to reverse every few seconds MAKING SURE SERVICE BRAKE IS APPLIED
6. Watch for movement of axles. You will see them moving around if they are bad.
7. After shutting down engine check the dust boots for cracks ect

I don't think it's a speedo cable...

unless the '81 is different than my '84. My speedometer is electronic.

Have you inspected the flex-discs?
