Letter from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality

I tried to scan this so that y'all could enjoy it as much as I did, but it just didn't work. I got home from work today to find in the mail a letter from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. From where I it says I was I think it must have rooted from when the dumb B***ch in the Hummer that was tailgaiting me the other day on my way home from the office. I guess she didn't like it when I slowed down just enough to stomp on it and leave her in a cloud of black smoke!!! Well for a min till she passed me and flipped me the bird.

"On 6/28/2005 at approximately 5:30 pm, a concerned citezen reported observing a vehicle with Texas license number XXXXXX at the following location .>>>>>>>>>> , emitting excessive visible exhaust emissions (smoke) The TxDOT vehicle registration records indicate that this license plate number is assigned to a 1981 MERZ 4D registered in your name.

If this is your vehicle, please examine its exhaust for dirty or excessive smoke. We Encourage you to correct the problem if the smoke persists for more than 10 seconds. > LMAO!

It goes on and on, but you know people have too much time on their hands....

They had a website to go to to retaliate, er whatever you want to call it and of course one of the auto fill blanks after "Does your vehicle need repair?" was "what type of fuel used?"

I figured heck she flipped me off, it was over with oh well....

I got a kick out of it!

and it goes on....etc.

I'm working on collecting one of those TCEQ letters for every diesel in my fleet! So far I've got one for the '83 300TD and '84 300D. But, it's hard to make enough smoke to PO somone when you're burning WVO so lately I've been doggin' the SDL around town (she's still got a belly full of dino)... when that pup revs out, there's a real cloud!

I got pulled over in the smoker once by the local sheriff, but have never received any mail over it. Of course when I romp on it the smoke goes away.....
I can't make the '85 smoke. (not a complaint)

somehow ive got the impression that diesel smoke isnt as bad for the environment as the deceptivly clear "air" that comes out of 8mpg suvs.

wouldnt the carbon in the smoke just fall to the ground?

exactly how bad is the exhaust from the diesel v. the exhaust from my leon?

According to the EPA specs, from the factory, my '84 300D generated less greenhouse gasses (8.9 tons/yr) than my wife's '97 Explorer Sport (9.4 tons/year). A 2001 Neon makes 7.2 tons/year and rates 2-3 on the EPA air pollution score (10 being best). There are no EPA air pollution score ratings for the MBZ diesels.

I know! I wondered if there was a place I could call to report 5 MPG! I'll take my 25+ and a couple clouds of smoke (and not being seen in a Hummer) any day!

Those letters crack me up--I haven't received one for the M-B yet, but the year I lived in Dallas, I got 5 of them for the Volvo diesel (which, truth be told, does smoke a lot!!!). I always mean to get them framed and hang them in the garage. I haven't been reported once since I moved back to Austin, though--which sort of surprises me; one would think Austinites would be more inclined to report an "environmental hazard" than Dallasites...

I strongly believe all Dallasites are living in some sort of "smoke screen". Why so many Hummers, large SUVs, quick to point fingers...?

Austinites, I believe, can see thru it.

Damn... I want a letter. Jimmyl, sell me that smoker.

I'm thinking the smoker could earn you one of those letters. However, I did drive a Volvo diesel awhile back, and it smoked ALOT more than the smoker! I still liked that wagon, and a 5 speed to boot.....

cool comparison on the greenhouse gas numbers. For extra credit you can research particulates & Sulfur. Let us know what you find out. If you've really got time for extra extra credit assess a change to (or your current use of if thats the case) biodiesel

Don't get me wrong I'm "into" diesels but greehouse gas emmisions aren't the sole component of they're impact.

regardless of what they driving - tailgaiters suck. Hummers are just that much easier to dislike...

Absolutely.

And, to be critical, I've read that diesels running biofuels (I can't remember if it was biodiesel or WVO) generate MORE oxides of nitrogen than when they run on dino.

most definately. Nox is the hurdle that the next gen of diesels are going to clear. that with the ULS should be interesting but in reality quite possibly too rich for me.
