95 E300D or 87 300D
Is the 95 turbocharged? and do they have similar performance and fuel economy as the potent and efficient 87 300D turbo, I am looking to upgrade.

I'd look at the '95.
I'd look at the 1995, for a number of reasons but most of all, it's EIGHT years newer! It has the newer interior and newer styling, the hood, grille, fenders, bumpers, and tailights are different, it has dual airbags and ABS standard, it has R134 air, and newer alloy wheels. And it's non-turbo, but it has the same rating as the 1993 300D 2.5 turbo that it replaced. The EDS motor in the 1995 is a great engine, and unless you're in high altitudes, I don't think you'll miss the turbo.
I've had all of them. I currently own the following- 2- W123 300D's 1- 1987 300SDL 1-1994 S350 I just sold my 1995 E300D last week , and I already miss it! I had a few '87 300D's , and they were great cars, and I know that they have lots of torque, but...I'd rather have the 1995. A really nice 1987 should fetch $4500-6500 with reasonable miles (say 135-150k) and a 1995 will bring $5k -$15k depending on the miles , color, ownership history, etc. |

87 is quicker, 95 gets better mpg. 95 has no turbo. The OM606 is more complex than the OM603 but cracked heads and bent connecting rods don't seem to afflict the OM606. There are problems with frequency valves and such but the effects don't leave you stranded.

The om603 turbo in the 87 was rated at 143HP/195lb-ft from the factory. I've never seen one of these on the dyno, but am confident those numbers went up after the trap oxidiser recall.
The om606 in the 95 is rated at 135HP. I think the torque is 155lb-ft. A properly running turbo engine is going to wallop the newer car in terms of acceleration and performance. The fat mid-range torque curve on the turbo engine is going to make it's power advantage feel much larger. That said, get the 95. It's getting difficult to find an 87 that isn't ragged out and doesn't have 250K miles on it. In contrast, there seem to be plenty of 95 diesels out there with about 100K miles on them - just broken in. For the price premium, my opinion is that the 95 offers more value. My $.02, - JimY |
