my 240D goes to 80 or 83 regularly, its safe commuting at that speed sometimes...

It'll peg the meter at 85, but once that happens, I back down for fear or exceeding the redline. All you guys doing a verified 100mph in a 240d must have 5 speeds ?

This thread is like a house fire, you can't help looking, but it's embarrasing.

80? 85? 90? What's the point? A healthy Chrysler K-car would hit 95, top speed isn't the 240's forte.

It might only go 80, but damn it looks good doing it.

I used to keep a GTi poster on the wall of my office, for the slogan not the car: "It's not how fast you go, it's how well you go fast"

Don't worry, the engine has a governed redline, even free-revving. It's at about 102 mph in the manual transmission 240D.

My tach shows around 4100rpm at 85mph. Redline is 5000rpm.

This was 78mph with a very tired engine in the winds of Wyoming back in '00. Notice I'm drafting another truck.

With a newer engine it's better and on a month-long trip to the Maritimes this summer I was doing 65-70 on the flats consistantly. Keep in mind this is a heavy, four-wheel drive truck that has the aerodynamic profile of a small building. Still, not too bad for a little 616!

i would

think so.

in my 240w300 engine i had a 346 then a 308. it would do a hundred either way.

i dont see how a stock 240 would do a hundred unless it were running undersized tires, which wouldnt surprise me.

I was driving my 240D in traffic the other day (300SD was getting some love) and was leaving a red light after it turned green. I knew everyone was going to hound up behind me becuase I was "acclerating slow" so I roared off in first...redlined it and grabbed 2nd...as I was dropping into 3rd and JUST easing into the 40-45mph range...saw the motorcycle cop sitting there. He wasn't even remotely LOOKING at my car...was looking furthur back the pack...not at me in the front redlined trying to get out of everyone's way.

Gotta love it...had it been my 300SD I would have been grabbing 2nd gear for a downshift at 50mph. Then again it has the radar detector for a reason and when I am not worring about people hounding me, I have more time to watch for the fuzz.
