Angry Mercedes wiper system

This is something that has been eating me for some time. The wiper system on 123 & 124 MB's suck! All you have are basically 3 speeds. The intermittent setting is usually too slow, then the next speed is usually too fast unless your in a steady shower going over 30 MPH and the last one, well if you need it, you're better off not going anywhere. I'm usually switching between the int setting and the first speed. If I leave it on the first speed, the damn wipers start scrubbing unless its a good downpour. I've cleaned the glass and am using OEM wiper blades. Has anyone installed a variable intermittent switch to slow down the first speed to something usable?

never have installed one. I find that they are quite good for being 70's technology.

yeah i agree the wipers suck! just the other day before the SD broke down it was raining and the wipers just made the seeing worse. At one point i rolled down the window and stuck my head out.

So if anyone knows how to adjust to better speeds please tell us!!

Silicone wiper blades have the rainX effect.

Anyone try the bosch single piece blade (similar to new vw blades)?

The 123 wipers may not have a ton of speeds to pick from, but they make a very strong system. Try driving a 123 with good wipers, then drive another car from that time period. The 123 wipers are about as good as those on modern cars.

My gripe is not so much about the blades but the speed selections. I - is too slow II - too fast and III - well, save it for a hurricane. It could really could use something at I.5 or an intermittent system that you could vary. About 18 years ago I had an '82 280ZX and it was the first car that I had that had a variable intermittent system. That system was perfect for any rainy condition. Our Tahoe has something just like it and it too is perfect for any kind of rain.
I've used Rain-X on another car several years ago and it seemed to make the blades chatter. OTH I didn't really need to use the wipers. The rain just beaded up and rolled off the windshield.

if the intermintent speed is too slow put it on the next one and dont worry. thats what i do if its too slow. and for the record i have ancos on it and they do fit! be happy your even getting rain. it sprinkled here for all of 10 sec. for the first time in nearly a year. now what did you say the wipers were made for?

I guess in AZ you use them to wipe the dust (or bugs for that matter) off the windshield.

126 Wipers

My 126 wipers are great.. they work quietly and the bosh blades have lasted me almost two years. The 123 seems a little slow, but much better than the American car wipers.

I personally hate rain-x. Becaue even though it works well it doesn't work good enough for real rain or the little rain that doesn't get big enough to bead up. So you always have to use the wipers anyway. Then when you use the wipers you get a film on the windshield for a good 5 seconds and can't see crap ola. My wife loves the stuff on the other hand. I can't stand to drive her car when it rains.

My grandpa used to cut a potatoe in half and rub it on their windsheilds way back when. Probably doesn't work as well as rain-x but I guess it worked none the less.

Tripledge wipers

I have had great results with the Tripledge wipers. I have had them on my '92Ford Explorer since '94 I think. I've never replaced them and they work just as perfectly now, as the day I put them on. I have put them on my parents' cars and of course on my Benz, all with great results.

The bad thing with those is that they squeak/chatter if the wipers are running faster than needed for the amount of rain on the windshield. The Explorer has variable speed delay but my 240D does not, so I have to cycle them on and off a lot if it's just a drizzle. I decided to use Rain-X but I try to avoid driving the 240D in the rain, hard to do of course in Washington.
