how fast does your 240 go?

I was completely astonished this morning when my 240D got up to 85mph!! The last one I had would only break 70 if it was downhill after a long straight road, and this one has twice the mileage!

So, how fast can one of these cars go?

I could feel a little more room when I hit 85 this morning, but I thought if I tried for 90, it would create a paradox that would unravel the space/time continuum! Maybe that only happens when a DeLorean hits 88mph!

Top speed on a 240D is 86 or 87 mph.

240D top speed

These 240D's are something really with only 60 or so HP new. I had my '80 4 speed manual over 90 some years back right before the engine failed to start after a few cold nights. It was diagnosed with bad rings & it did burn a ton of oil - but still, great performance & mileage right down to the end.

I don't know, the speedometer only goes up to 85! Probably not much more than 90, though. It burns a fair amount of oil, especially at high speeds; I plan on having new stem seals installed when I get the valves adjusted.

1974 240 4 speed - I got mine up to 80mph recently but the tires are slightly oversize and I seem to have a odometer exchange with a 220D....so I am not sure what the true correction is

One time about 13 or 14 years ago when I drove my Euro 240D I had gotten confused about the flight that my secretary had booked me on. I walked in the office a little early and was standing at someones office door talking, brief case in hand, when she walked in, looked at her watch and said "Larry your flight is in 35 minutes. I usually allowed AT LEAST an hour to the airport. I asked her to call and get a terminal and gate number and call me in the car. I then RAN, no SPRINTED to the car and weaved through the morning traffic West on 635 in Dallas. The traffic opened up at 35E and I already had a head of steam. I have meant several times to look to see if that stretch of road is downhill.

Anyway a little West of 35E on 635 headed to DFW airport I saw 100MPH on my speedometer. Yes the speedometer was accurate. I expect that this section of road must have been slightly downhill. In this area we have a prevailing SouthWest wind, but there either was no wind, or maybe a slight breeze from behind. I am certain that I was not drafting anyone on the road to attain that speed.

BTW, when I ran to the gate, the ticket taker ran down the walkway and banged on the door. They opened and let me in. Someone else was already on the plane who didn't have the information for our meeting. It would have been ugly had I not made the flight and he was very relieved to see me.

My car is a Euro car and it always was peppy for a 240D. I can't explain that burst of speed but I did see it with my own eyes. I drove that car hundreds of thousands of miles on the Interstate and it probaby cruised at 75 or 80 more often than not, and running it to 85 or 90 in bursts was routine.

My first 240D was a 77 US car with an 85MPH speedometer as I recall. I don't ever remember seeing it peg the speedometer, but it could run 80 all day long.

On the flat, open road these cars are not as dog slow as some might imagine. I even drove my Euro car a good bit on the hilly roads of Arkansas and it didn't do too bad as long as you used the gears wisely.

Have a great day,

93 or 94 I saw it get to in my '78 but I just could not get it to crack the 95mph mark.
