Speed sensor for the tach

I have a 300td 1987. Where is the sensor for the tachometer?

Behind the oil filter. It reads triggers on the flywheel or flexplate.

also check this...

I dont know if your 87 is the same as my 85, but check out your egr control module. In my car tach receives its signal from the egr control module. This module is protected by a relay with a 10 amp fuse...check to see if the fuse is blown. In my car it is mounted under the dash, behind the glove compartment on the right side, above the egr control module.

( I replaced the sensor at the fly wheel, with no effect, only to find out later that the fuse was blown!!....A 50 cent fix after replacing a 50 dollar part!!!)

Mark did you mean your 84 300TDT? Or do you have an 85 W124? Anyways, for your 84 300TDT, where does the wiring from the rear of your tach connect/route/mount to?? I believe the tach plug on the rear of your tach/clock gauge has a 3-prong plug... but I would like to trace that all the way to where the wires end up at. Thanks in advance if you know the answer!

On your '87 it is attached to the bottom of the bellhousing. Actually, do you see the plug right by your oil filter cannnister? It should be held to the intake, the plug is about an inch thick and is right around the 5th or 6th cylinder. it has a small bracket that holds the connection. You will need an allen key to remove the sensor from the bellhousing but beware! Clean it out really well and make suer you're on it properly before proceeding. When I had to replace my oil pan I had to cut up the pan to get the sensor out because I stripped it out. Good thing the pan needed replacing anyway. Oh yeah, I also broke an EZ out trying to extract it so messing with that threaded bolt could be bad.

Thanks
David
