99 E300 turbodiesel alternator removal
Can anyone describe the procedure and the tools needed for removing the alternator on the 99E300TD? I'm having an intermittent "battery charge"
warning on the dash. One shop said the alternator was toast, another said that the alternator and battery were ok and a third said that they didn't know what was wrong. I called a local alternator rebuilder who said the only true test for an alternator is a bench test and at $350 for a Bosch reman., I'd like to know what's going on before throwing parts at the problem. Voltage readings are between 12.87 and 13.5 volts at the battery. This has been going on for about a week but the car starts, runs and acts normally. The removal looks pretty straightforward, but hints, tips etc. are appreciated. Steve |
