Are you a gambler?
If you have oil leaks, you may not have much to worry about. However, it is never a good idea to overfill the oil on a diesel due to the fact of runaway. This is where the engine can feed off of its own engine oil. With heat, your level will be even higher.
Not trying to cause paranoia. Just suggesting it would be better without the overfill.

Where does it show on the stick? If it is indeed only 4 ounces over filled, don't worry about it. That would amount to probably a 1/16" or less over the full mark on the stick.
Good luck, |

I don't know where it would do that due to foaming... if it were doing that due to a head gasket leak it would do it without regard to foaming....

Never heard that one either, the one thing it can do is cause extra oil burning which would probably correct itself.

How do you know?
Since we normally deal with volume when it comes to oil, such as quart, pint or even half a pint, how do you come up with 4 oz. Certainly you are not using 2 cycle oil which I believe is measured out in ounces on some cans. If you are really over or short 4 oz., it would be hard to see that on the dipstick and I wouldn't worry about it. Just try to be correct next time.

I get 4 oz from amount over..Since the amount between low and full is 1 quart....right??? this is about 1/4 of that above the full level on the stick.... OK ( and the manual said 8.5 qts so that's what I put in; I will use 8 qts. next time ...at 291,000........

Okay, first of all 1/4 of a quart is 8 ounces, not 4. I thought I remembered somebody saying the distance between the add and full was 2 quart, but I am not sure. That would make sense, as you put in 1/2 quart too much (8.5 vs 8), and 1/4 of 2 quart would be a 1/2 quart.

To be correct about it
Austin, I would stay with what the "Book"or manufacturer calls for. If the book calls for 8.5 quarts when you change the oil and filter, that is what you should put it. Now, if adding the correct amount of oil leads to a slight error on your dipstick, well that is easy to live with. I assume that your complaint is on the dipstick reading after you started and ran the engine. Your dipstick will always read high until you do that. Now the headgasket thing is an entirely different problem. I have not heard of a leaking head gasket leaking "oil" into the coolant. You do get compression and combustion gases going in to the coolant while running and that is not good as it usually leads to terriffic overheating. The big problem though, is in cooling down when the engine is not running that the coolant gets sucked out of the system and will wind up in the crankcase through the defective gasket. It doesn't take much coolant in the crankcase to totally ruin the engine. Usually it does not take much coolant in the crankcase to show up on the dipstick as discolored oil, "gray or milky", but before that it will show up as overheating and a loss of coolant.

I wouldn't worry about it. Your engine will probably burn it off anyways.
