Can you elaborate please?

My questions are as follows:

1) If you are turning the crank, and not watching the plunger on the tool, is it possible to rotate the crank right through the small slot on the end of the plunger? I appears that it must be possible to do this because the slot is only about the width of a screwdriver, and not very deep.

So, if I expect the plunger to engage the "V" inside the IP, and stop the crank from rotating, am I kidding myself????

Why isn't the slot on the tool wider and deeper to allow the plunger to make a hard stop on the "V"??

Your not supposed to turn the crank with the tool in the injection pump. wouldn't that defeat the purpose?

Also, does anyone know if there is a difference between the tool SamsTag Sales sells compared to the oem Mercedes tool?
The Samstag tool is made by SirTools.

I think the tool was something that just convieniently would work...it was dreamed up after the fact...thats why its timed at 15 degrees VS 24 like the normal way....I read this somewhere and I don't remember where....so you can take it with a grain of salt.

I suspect that using a breaker bar on the crank nut that it would be possible to roll the engine/IP right through where the pin slips in. In addition, going by the book, with the engine at 15 d ATDC the mark on the IP spline is right at 4 teeth past where the marks line up on the IP when the tool slips into the slot.

You're not supposed to turn the crank with the locking pin engaged in the timing lug. The suggestion was to turn the crank to get the locking pin to engage... and no further.

Brian,

I like the idea of using a dowel. Since you have difficulty with your locking tool, set the crank to 15 ATDC, put a soft wood dowel in the timing port, then give the dowel a smack with a hammer. Note the clocking of the dowel. Pull the dowel and see what kind of impression was imparted. It might help you figure out why the locking tool won't engage.

Now watch the dowel splinter inside Brian's IP

That sounds like a good plan. I'll give it a try just to see where the notch is, relative to 15°ATDC.

Right now, I best not move it, without the camshaft.

Are you having the lobes ground? It's difficult to crank the engine when the lobes have pointy tips

Nah, just doing the valves and the head gasket and a bunch of odds and ends "while I am in there".
