rear speakers

hey yall--

shlomo is running well and im on my way to getting the vacuum figured out. itll be fixed by next weekend. the next things are going to be cutting a dash cover from some thin felt carpet and having it bound up at an upholstery shop to cover the edges and installing back speakers.

the car is a 1979 240 with the am/fm europa(not an option to get a new stereo, chrome is too cool) and front speakers only. it does an ok job drowning out the ending noise but the back is a little boomy with the dead space back there. i want to install factory sized, decent speakers.

i put pioneer speakers in the front and they are plenty loud. dare i say it, they even produce a bit of bass.... but i want more.

i do not have a fader, i just have the block off plate. i have heard negative things about the fader making the speakers not sound so well or producing static. is this always the case? id like the installation to look as original as possible, no holes cut or anything like that.

can a new fader switch be had that wont be as bad as the 20yo used pieces? is this economical? can i just not use the fader and splice wires from the front? how bad would that sound to have 4 speakers run on 2 channels?

i know next to nothing about audio, i know the neon came with lots of wires and speakers and has a great stereo that i replaced all the speakers in recently, but i dont know anything about running wires or hooking them to the radio!

I have no problems with the fader in my car. I have the original Becker with new Pioneers all around under the factory covers (even in the back). The problem with splicing into the front wires as I found with the SL is that the smaller front speakers tended to drown out the larger rears the required more power to equal the volume. The fader will balance the power. The stock system does have plenty of power from the 2 channel head unit for 4 moderate size speakers, provided you don't listen to that noise called rap and have a passion for trying to blow out speakers.

What type and size Pioneer speakers are they? I heard Pioneer speakers are a good combo with the Becker Europa's and Grand Prix's? Was there a BIG difference between the stock and Pioneers - high's? low's? mid's? ...I'm curious because I'd like to get better speakers for my car too... Thanks!

4" in the front, 5.25" rear. The rears require slight shaving of the wood panel to get them to seat (2-4mm only) and the plastic liner removed. The factory cover will fit over it all if you remove the tabs on the new speakers. I don't have the rears screwed in, they just sit there with the covers on top and they don't move at all. Fronts drop right in. They sound great for 4 and 5.25" speakers, and work great for me, but I don't blast loud music. I would recommend them.

i got my pioneer speakers at wal mart, i looked and looked for a center console cover in every 123 car at the u pull it but the one that did have the fader had mangled wires and one of those ugly early 90s radios sitting in the front floorboard.

my car is like new and i do not want one of those faded faders in it, i want a nice black one. id also want the factory wiring to the back, the front is still good, how would the back be bad?
