W123 Engine Mount
I told the shop to replace my 2 engine mount and a tranny mount on my 85 300D. When I took the car in, the car was shaking like crazy, you can see the hood shaking and in additional to the diesel sound, you can hear the kong kong kong kong sound. Now, after I took it out, the car was like a gasoline car. It wasn't shaking, very smooth, and you can only hear the diesel sound (klaata klaata klaata). After driving around 10 - 15 miles, when I came to a stop light, I felt the car shaking again. It wasn't as crazy as before, where you can see the whole hood vibrating. Its just a little shaking. I opened my hood, the engine was shaking like crazy, but not the car. I looked at the engine mount, it seems like a boat, moving left and right.
What might be wrong? They didn't screw it tight enough? Or something else? |

it sounds
as if they left some bolts loose and they fell out.

Check yer oil cooler hoses.....In my car the AC belt started to saw through the oil cooler hose because of the additional freedom that a buggered mount had afforded the engine to waltz around the engine bay.

maybe your idle speed is too low. mine would shake noticeably more until i upped the idle speed just the slightest bit.

I tend to agree with our resident architect with one possible twist. Check the mount shocks to see if they are attached properly. If they are, then remove them to determine if they still have resistance. The shocks working properly is just as important as the mounts being in good condition.
Good Luck, Tom

Is it difficult to remove the engine shock without a lift?
I'm just curious, how does the engine oil line look like and what does it do? |

New update:
I started the car up this morning, it was as smooth as if I just took the car out from the shop. Didn't go far though. Maybe if I go a few miles, the engine warms up and it'll shake again? Perhaps this happens, what might be the reason? |

Schmohey,
I retract what I said about the mount shocks. If it is smooth-running this morning there must be something else going on. Once the shocks have gone bad, they are bad forever. Same with the mounts. Maybe somebody else can chime in here about rack dampener pins or ? The oil cooler line runs right beneath the A/C compressor. The oil from the engine is routed to the oil cooler by the radiator. If the motor mounts collapse enough, the belt from the A/C will rub throught the oil cooler line and cause catastrophic oil loss. Tom

The engine mounts do not stop an engine from shaking. They just prevent some of the vibration from being transmitted to the frame.
To stop the engine from shaking at idle, adjust (or replace) the governor idle pin (aka rack damper pin) on the rear of the injection pump. You might be amazed at the improvement. |

I've tested it again today, it seems like it only happens when the car is warm/hot. Do you happened to have a picture of the pin?
Second question is, today my coolant expansion tank was overflowing antifreeze. I didn't fill in any coolant. This never happened before. Do you suspect the oil cooler line, or was it just too hot? |

oil cooler
line is completely separate from the coolant so the overflowing there cant be from engine oil cooler. the trans cooler is a part of the radiator so if there is a failure there tranny fluid can go into the coolant. it would be pink then.
the rough running when hot, well, maybe it is running roughly all the time and is being masked by the warmup timing on the injection. idle too low? air in the lines? does the mount move around like you first described still? are all the bolts in the mount? the shocks can be changed wo jacking up anything. dont think they are the problem though.

I'll order a new rack dampen pin tomorrow, from searching, I think the old type was silver, and the new type was gold? I have the silver one.
Well, when I saw my car leaked coolant, which was overflowing from the coolant resouvier, the temperature was nearly at 120. The other thing I also wanted to ask is that, should the aux fan be turning on after 100? I've checked the aux fan, and it doesn't move freely when you tried to turn it by force. Compared to my 190, you cannot spin the fan without force. The mount, the middle part where it holds on to the engine, when hot, that moves.like a boat. However, the car does not shake as if there's an earthquake after replacing the mount no matter if it's cold or hot. Only when its hot will it shake slightly. |

I'll probably need a "new" aux fan. I'll test if mine is working first (probably not).
