Help 83 300D Ignition
I am having the problem with the ignition where the steering lock is sticking. I was trying to get it apart so that I could grind of the opin that sticks in the column and this is where I am. I got the key cylinder removed. I looosened the clamp on the ignition where it attahes to the columd and removed the vaccum hoses and switch. The negative terminal on the battery is off. What is the secret to removing the ignition from the column? I'm in the middle of this and its late.

push and pull hard
Drainhard; I didn't see mention that you loosend the two 13mm nuts just inside the cavity where the dash "gauges" were and directly on top of the steering column. Hard to see, easy to feel. Take off the two nuts, let the wheel down enough to pull off the very thick washers, then push the steering wheel down hard and to the left. At the same time, from your position in the drivers seat, reach up under the ignition and pull the other way. You did release the detent pin on the left side of the steering column, didn't you? But then if you haven't dropped the steering column you probably havn't. Anyway there is a little pin that you can see when you drop the column, just behind the dash, right side of the column and it is in there. Tough to see, but you have to find it and poke it down with a small screwdriver. There is also an excellant article in the DIY section here by Mr. Stein that is really helpful. You can find that here. http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~jjs5772/W123/

Another one
Drainhard: Here is another good page. http://dieselgiant.com/mercedes_diesel_maintenance_tips1%20page%202.htm And let me say this also. Don't get too impatient when working on this ignition. Yes I know its late, its hot and bugs abound, but take your time and do it right.
