Jeepers Creepers!

Well all i've ever really heard about "JEEP" is that they're always a pain in the A-- to work with and always breaking down. Besides who would trade in a MERCEDES BENZ for an unreliable JEEP anyway?

Question Huh?

If you were responding to my post, I never said I got rid of my E300D. I replaced my 92 Bronco.

Sorry fellows, My statement was in "general". The jury is still out here in the U.S. on the Jeep Diesel. Just like the 603 back in '86, six months after it was introduced I think the jury was still out. Several years later we began to find out about the cracked heads

If you're looking for a Diesel SUV in the United States, the picking are mighty slim. The only ones I know of are the Liberty, the Ford Excursion (which is going out of production so I hear) and the Hummer H1. I have read that the next generation Suburban will be designed to accept the Duramax, but I don't know when that'll happen.

Talking V.M.Motori

They make excellent small Marine Diesel engines.

Jeep liberty buyback

A friend of mine bought one about three months ago, Diamler is buying it back. I live in mountains of Colorado as does my friend. Turns out the new jeep diesel cannot make it up I70 without overheating, this overheating issue is known to diamler and so far no fix, his particular car had everything replaced still no fix, problem only occured climbing, none the less while he like the car, he is having them buy it back, lemon law. The service manager said there were three others with the same problem. I think I would wait on this one.

I can floor it all the way to eisenhower tunnel in my TD (Traffic permitting) and not even touch the 90* mark. I think they put too much focus on emissions and engine performance. A 2.8L engine in a heavy 4WD SUV is not a good match. A 6 cylinder (V or inline) between 3.0L and 3.5L would be a better order. As for C&D getting 11mpg, even a Dodge Cummins can beat that in the city. Unless they were driving with the parking brake on, the editors MUST have been smoking some dang good crack.

Love my MB. But I hate to say that it's been the most unreliable -- and expensive to maintain -- car I've ever owned.

I, too, was dissappointed to read the CU Liberty diesel review, especially when it came to economy -- 18 mpg overall. It's a shame that, with so few diesels on the US market, and with so many great diesels being sold worldwide, DC could get it so wrong.

On the other hand, Consumer Union has always got it wrong when it came to VW TDIs. It must employ Paul Bunyon to man their vehicle test.

I don't think they're using the same engines in the Lib. Plus diesel engines in marine applications run under different conditions and are configured for that application. I'm just not sure in which direction this would affect engine life.

DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR!! cause in this case what you heard is so far off base.

I bought one for my wife back in April, she has 7500 miles on it now and loves it! We are retiring her old 82 300D.

Any diesel lover on this board would fall in love with this buggy, I did the second I walked up to one and heard that familiar little chatter. This thing will jolt you when you floor it, it's fast & smooth.

I used it this past week for my work while my Navigator gets new air bags, I was pulling my tool trailer and cruising at 75-80 with no problems. I beat two other lanes of traffic off the line, even pulling the trailer. I'm sure I left the other drivers scratching their heads wondering how I smoked them.

The reason for the lower than expected miliage is that is a 4X4 truck, not a 123 MB. My wife gets over 26 MPG highway. I read that the diesel version of the Liberty is 1000 LBs heavier than it's gas version, so much so that they had to beef up the front end for it.

The Liberty CRD is rated to tow 5000 LBs, the gas version is rated for like 3000 LBs.

My wife's is the limited with the heated leather seats, navigation, moon roof...the works, it's like a little cadillac. It was a nice 700 mile ride from Indiana to NJ when I bought it.

I've read good things about MB's VM Motori, there are alot of vehicles running around europe with this same diesel motor.

They are a rare find, I had to fly to Indiana from NJ to find one with all the options that I wanted & a price that I would pay.

Back in april, I began looking on ebay for one. I saw a couple stripped/basic new left over 05's for $19K, pretty cheap for a new diesel. My 2006 stickered at $32K, but got it for $26500 by shopping around (read; cheap skate).

How stripped out is that? Did it have basics like AC, cruise control, delay wipers?

That VM engine they use in the Liberty is for the market in Europe the same thing like the old "Detroit diesel" was for the US market decades ago...it is a cheap, old and simple diesel, developed in the late 60's and upgraded with direct injection for today's market. This engine is sold by VM to all second chance car companies: KIA,HYUNDAi,Mazda,Chrysler Europe...,and everybody who tries to sell a car in Europe without having the money or desire to build a engine for that specific market where diesels are 80% of total car.Kia Sedona van in Europe has the same diesel like the Liberty, all the Alfa Romeo's,Fiat,Lancia of the late 80's early 90's ran very good and loud on that venerable motor. It just cracks heads every 70-80 tousand km(50k miles),just replace it and keep going.
