Is $800 fair price for a 300sd parts car

I currently own a 1982 300sd.

I have the chance to buy a 1983 300sd that is currently not running but in good cosmetic shape. The guy had a diesel mechanic at a Chevy dealership put on an injection pump he got from Potamic German since his car was having fuel issues. I asked him if he timed the pump. He said "no." The got the engine running by manually giving it fuel but it did not keep running.

He offered it to me for $800.

Yes or no??? Is this a fair price?

Sounds like an excellent price to me, especially with the possibility of getting it running properly. Then you have a $3-4K vehicle, if the paint and interior is in good shape.

depends on what you want out of it. I actually paid $1500 for a parts car about 5 years ago. I've used a lot from it already and bought it mainly for the rebuilt trans it had. Unfortunately for me, that trans didn't work out too well, but those are the breaks. Personally, I think I wouldn't again spend near that much again, I really overpaid for a parts car, but it was fully fuctional - I easily drove it home.

I bought a '77 300D for $250 a few months back. Engine had a broken chain, so it was trashed. Had 4 new tires (with rubber pimples still) and brand new rebuilt injectors. I got a pretty good deal I guess. The car has an excellent black interior, which unfortunately I don't currently need.
With it, in the trunk, was a package from Performance products. There was a brand new timing chain, tensioner, large guide rail, two lower guides, 5 brand new glowplugs (pencil) and a 617.912 engine manual.
A deal that actually worked out!
If the SD runs, or if you could make it run, that would be a fantastic deal. I would have a hard time laying down $800 just for a parts car though, but then again you would have tranny, starter, alt., half shafts maybe, etc.....

willrev,

I paid $1200 for a '79 300SD parts car 7 years ago. Trouble is I never get to take any parts from it. Why? Because it is still running 65,000 miles later with less the another $500 spent on it.

Next year it will be a parts car because of the rust. That's OK, I have its replacement already.

So I would vote for it to be a very fair price. You can probably get it running, too. What does a Chevy mechanic know about a MB Diesel engine if he didn't even time the IP when he replaced it?

I paid about $600 for my 78 300D parts car. Very rusty bottom from being in a fiel for 3 years, but 100% complete. ALso full maintanance records going back to the day it was new. The interior is good, crack free dash, and everything works. I will not start though. I have been very carefull to NOT getting it running. If i got it running I couldn't take any parts from it.

I paid $500 for my SD intending to get 2-3 years of good use out of it.

I would have trouble paying $800 for a parts car, I have purchased 3 now as parts cars and have never paid over $400 for them. I just picked up a non-running 85 300SD for $400 and think I have a line on another SD for about $200.
