Believable Engine Story?

When i purchased my 83 cd turbo, the PO also gave me the original engine as part of the deal (w/ working turbo and IP). This was the story with the engine that he told me.. (btw about 200,000 on that engine -617.952)

I used to have bad vacuum on the transmission. The trans was hard to come by so I dealt wiith it but one of the quirks of the bad vacuum was the trans would stay in low after a stop now and then. I would have to pull to the shoulder, turn off the motor restart the car to get vacuum again then everything would be fine until it did it a couple days later again. I let my daughter-in-law use the car. She drove it from the LV to Willow grove. The trans did its thing. So she drove it in low all the way to work 45 miles. Then She calls me and says there was a knock in the engine. So what she did was wind the engine out locked in low gearand damage one of the bearings.
Right after that I purchased the motor you have in the car now , pulled the other one and was going to give it new bearings and never got to it.

Is this a believable story? If so i think that the bearings aren't too hard to do with the engine out.. is there anything else that i should do to make this a good engine again?

If the crank is undamaged...if it was me I would do Timing chain...seals and gaskets , and rings and have a valve job done....then you would be good for another 300K

thats what i wanted to hear

awesome... that sounds like it shouldn't be too bad of a job. I'm not experience with working on engines .. i think i may be able to adjust the valves, and do the timing chain with the DIY stuff on this forum.. but are there any good manuals or sites that list all the seals that should be changed and good ways to inspect the crank and make sure thats good?

Just wait till you take it appart.......

Best manual is the hard copy Mercedes manual for your engine.....they are not cheap or all that easy to get...expect to pay 80-100 dollars on ebay.

I would not attempt to do it without the manual....and know its a lot more involved that changing a tire....proper tourque....proper measuring etc is key to a good job.

Fastlane is a great place for the parts at a very fair price.

anticipation

I have the Cd version but it's not very easy to use.. i think i may print it out and see if it's the same as the paper version.. I also have many part supply books becuase the PO of my car works for WorldPac.. which is the parts distributor that many of the parts on fastlane is through so it's easy to find what i need...

I feel like i want to take it apart this weekend.. but in reality i know i have to mow the lawn along with a million other things.... looks like i'll be playing with it during the winter!

very unlikely

that the crank is undamaged if you have bad bearings. also, the bottom end in these is the toughest part and to do damage you have to do something really bad like running low on oil. the po story sounds kind of fishy to me.
