Running on pure corn oil...

I was reading the article on "Diesel Giant" that showed the guy running his 300sd on pure corn oil from Walmart. It was just a test where he inserted a half-gallon tank in-line. Apparently the car ran smoother at idle, didn't smoke, and there was no noticable difference in power while driving. All this without the mixing of chemicals and the whole process of WVO. Does anybody know if running on pure corn oil would actually be considered an option long-term? Realizing the oil wouldn't be free like WVO, however with cleaner emmisions and the rising cost of diesel fuel why not?? Anybody know the price per gallon of corn oil?

If it was cheaper than diesel I'd do it So long as it didn't do any damage to the engine or fuel system.... I'd put a tank right under the hood and hook it up with a selector valve marked "corn, or diesel"

If you have the storage capacity, right now unrefined bulk soybean oil is nearly cost-competitive with diesel. Unfortunately you have to buy it a railroad car at a time.

Current price of Soy Oil

We are paying about $15.50 per 35 pound (about 7.4 pounds per gallon for this product = 4.73 gallons = $3.28 per gallon) jug of Soy oil at the bakery here in Nashville. We use about 5000 pounds per week (no waste, we are not frying), and our pricing is based on the market price+volume of product ordered+freight. We usually purchase in 20,000 pound quantities.

Local Diesel is about $2.30 per gallon so it's still about a buck difference, but I have been eyeballing those pallets of oil The problem is that as the price of regular diesel goes up, the price to farm, process and ship the SVO will also. It's gonna be bad all around if the price of SVO equals the price of diesel, cause they are both gonna be high at that point. I am not an economics professor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.......

Sam's or Costco might be just about as cheap based on the volumes they go through.

I purchase large quantities of bulk soybean oil at work - depending on the market it costs about 0.35 - 0.40 per pound. Problem is it's crude oil used for frying, not the refined stuff. Will bulk soybean oil work?

Sorry, my earlier post should have been unrefined instead of refined, it is fixed now.

Will unrefined work? That depends on how unrefined it is. Raw extracted oil has a lot of compounds in it that could cause deposits and gumming in your fuel system. Fortunately, many of those compounds are actually pretty valuable compounds, so they are sometimes removed and sold separately. The remaining oil would probably work just fine.

cgryphon,
Do you work at a bakery? Do you ever read my magazine, Modern Baking? If not, I'll send you a copy. Just wondering.

I did the same thing two weeks ago with my 300SD. I got an old apple juice container, and after washing and drying it thoroughly I filled it with .5 micron filtered WVO. Then I warmed the engine on diesel and hooked the lines up to the container and re-started the car.

Very smooth idle, no smoke, quieter, and no loss of power.

It was truely amazing... I will be converting my car to burn WVO by the end of the summer.

TRY IT! You too will be amazed.

Well Ed, it seems it is a small world. I only know one Ed at Modern Baking, and you probably only know one Clay at a frozen decorated cake plant in Nashville.

Positive ID? Busted? Will I have to stop posting during business hours?

Send me a PM or email. My address is cgryphon@msn.com

First off, yes corn oil will do just nicely in your diesel. Install a good two tank system and go for it. If you use bulk oil you may want to invest in a few low micron filters, like 5 or 1 micron (available at Mcmaster Carr- http://www.mcmaster.com/ page 328) and then it is ready to go, providing there is no water in it.
You can also do WVO the same way again providing there is no water in it and it is filtered properly. This later is what I do and the Benz loves it.
