i-p no good
Hello guys, I posted last week about re-timing my 1984 300d turbo using the i-p lock tool. Well it could not be done, I decided to take out the ip for a closer look and to see were this notch is on the bench. Alittle history, I had the pump rebuilt in 2000 and installed it using the drip method since I was unaware of the ip lock or ab timing tool. since then I have always fiddled with the timing to get rid of that annoying idle. In 2003 I installed a timing chain and idle was still not great but was ok off the line. I also replaced the injectors in 2002 before I went to co. with the car. Idle still not geat but starting, fuel economy ok. SO , after looking in the site hole for the timing I cannot see anything that resembles a notch or a groove, I did see however a little small round nodual that looks like something might have been there. Is it possible that the rebuilder of my pump nocked this little piece off during the rebuild ? well the pump is back in
and I know that with the new chain installed and the pump in at 24 degs. I should be fine. I am going out this morning to do a final check, I would like for it to be smooth an quiet . any suggestions about ip timing and the lock tool and setting timing to 15deg would be helpful thanks guys. How are you looking for the timing lug? It should align with the access hole around 24*ATDC. That's every other time the crank is at 24*ATDC.
I believe that vintage of IP has a metal bowl on the IP main shaft. The timing lug is fixed to the lip of the bowl. I doubt the lug is a separate piece attached to the bowl so the nodule thing you're referring to must be it. Are you saying there's no way for the lock tool you have to engage the nodule/lug? i-p timing
yes you are correct. at the 24deg. mark there is in view of the site hole, appear that something was there at one time, also when you say the old drum type it does look like a drum inside the pump. I did do the drip method on sunday and set the timing at aprox. 23 degs. it run good and very smooth off the line but I still think that one or more of the injectors are not matched and giving me some what of a not normal idle. every attempt has been made to get it right, new chain, valve adj., new filters, high speed tune up, diesel purge(during diesel purge, engine quiets down and runs smooth) thats why the injectors are next and I want to send them to colorado biodiesel to get shimmed. the injectors I have now were installed in 2002 at 219,000 miles and may not be balanced correctly. any ideas would help thanks guys.

Hey,
When using the IP lock tool the crank should be set at 15 deg ATDC minus 1/2 chain stretch. Danny

dieselnut14,
Hey, its a Diesel. Its supposed to idle rough. If you want a perfectly smooth and quiet idle, get a multi cylinder gasoline engine. P E H |
