'84 300SD rough idle

For the past few months the car would idle rough but drive fine and once it warmed up it would idle fine also. Now it idles so rough it sounds like it will fall apart but still drives fine. Anyone out there know why a car would idle very rough but drive fine while the gas is applied then idle rough again when stopped for a light? Any ideas would help. Thanks

Rough idle

Hello

On mine it was broken motor mounts on both sides.

This will cause exactly what you are describing.

Thank you
Ken

Do some searching on general tune up things to do. Check your motor mounts and rack dampner adjustment. Run some injector cleaner and see where all that takes you.

If you want to know the scoop on anything I just mentioned, use those words as search terms on this site

There are so many variables which can cause rough idle. Worn out injectors can certainly do that. You can take the #1 injector out and check if it is worn. Use a brass wire brash to clean out the area around the injector tip. If there is a concaved area around the the injector tip, then the injectors need to be replaced or replace with new nozzle. I did this on my 83 SD and after replacing the injectors, it runs much smoother than before.

I wish I had of known this before.

I passed on a like new, 1-owner, 84' Mercedes 300SD turbo diesel for $1800 (white with gray interior) a couple of years ago because of a very "rough idle". Some folks on another Benz forum said it could be bad compression, so I passed on it.

This makes me cross.

Water under the bridge however.
