1984 300SD - White House limo! Transmission question..

I purchased a 1984 300SD on Ebay. Picked it up at a great price, as it was just pulled out of storage and pictures were taken. Turns out a retired Capital Hill lobbyist laywer owned the car. It was sometimes used to bring people into the White House during the Reagan and 1st Bush era. Anyways, its beautiful. Has cleaned up wonderfully. Beautiful Dark Blue with grey interior. Even got the 86-91 (I believe that's the years) chrome wheels and tires in today. Here is the problem.

Driving it today, I noticed the transmission hesitating from 2nd - 3rd. All other gears seem to be fine. Is there anything special I can do to fix this transmission? I purchased some Lucas Transmission Fix..but I have heard different stories on how much to put in.

I may sell it on Ebay with a reserve, and include a transmission rebuild with the auction.

Thanks for your help.

Jason Quinn

do a search on 2-3 flare. Fairly common. A number of things can be done that help a lot of transmissions, but not all.

engine RPM increase instead of decrease when shifting out of second into a higher gear.

It was driven while being stored. It actualy just recently came back from a trip to the east coast (from Kansas City I believe). When I was bringing it home, a transmission hose busted. Had to replace that, and the fluid. Drove fine for a while..and on the way home.

these trannys are VERY sensitive to fluid level. Make sure you check it by the owners manual on completely flat ground, hot fluid.
If it was running fine and suddenly acted up could also be vacuum issue, dirt?
Did you change the filter or just fluid?

Good question. So I called the mechanic near Tulsa who did the transmission hose replacement. He said he just did the fluid...not the filter. He thinks its the filter, feels confident in that. Also says add some Trans X? Said that helps transmissions.

If the trans is OK, check the vacuum lines. A simple hard and brittle rubber hose connection, say between the vacuum modulator at the trans and the hard plastic line going up into the engine bay could cause poor shifting.

Also maybe a half turn counter-clockwise out on the external vacuum modulator adjuster (I believe this increases the shift pressure) might help. Confirm this.

Also check vacuum lines and vacuum level for the lines in the engine bay that going to the transmission.

Definitely change the filter (Only use an approved filter such as what this site sells)

Wonderful information. How do I know if the filter is approved?
