w123 300TD hitch question

Hi all,
what sort of hitches were made for w123 300TD wagons? I've done a search and come up with a few class 1 hitches, and some seemingly home-made class 2 reciever hitches.
I'd rather not buy a new one, as the only ones I've found are class 1 and $350 or so... so, what are my options? It would be nice to have a receiver style so I'm not stuck with a ball on the tail at all times...
Also, if anyone has one they aren't using, let me know!

Thanks!
K

there was

one for sale on this web recently, i think. the proper hitches hook on to the bumper shock bolts and have a pipe that runs up and fastens up by the rear axle to distribute the weight. i would be leery of any homemade ones unless i had studied a professionally made one to see how it fastens to the car.

pretty sure factory hitches are pretty rare over here. I have one but mine is a gray market import. I believe someone was selling the one off his 300SD not too long ago. It looked to be just like mine. I havent towed anything with mine so I dunno what the towing capacity is. It does bolt to the bumper shock mounts as well as the frame and body I think. The bumper seems to be made to go with the hitch.

Y'all may already know about this, but take a look at www.hitch-web.com .

You can download the installation instructions and see how each hitch attaches.

Last time somebody checked on a 300TD wagon though, they said hitches for it were quite expensive.

oh yeah

the tank location is under the floor so a wagon would be unique prob.

A friend of mine has a hitch similar to this one (straight not bent) welded directly to his bumper.

He tows his gutted 60's VW bus that he uses as a cargo trailer with it.

I am not sure what the weight of a gutted VW bus with no engine or tranny is, but by the time he has it loaded up i would guess 2000lbs would be in the ballpark.

welded

to the bumper would not be safe inho. the connection to the brackets is suspect on any older 123 or 126 benz.

TD Hitches

I also have a TD and have searched for a hitch in the US with no luck. I have found new hitches from a company in England, and Bosal in Germany. Oris and (I think) Bosal were OEM suppliers for Mercedes.
I have seen a few used ones on eBay Germany, and a new one manufactured by Starr. None of them have detachable balls. The TD hitches are unique and can not interchange with the sedan or coupe. I have seen two different capacities of 1500 & 1900 kilos with a tongue weight of 75 kilos.
From what I have gathered, the electrical is also somewhat complicated and you are better off to get the correct wiring set for your car.
Here is a link to one for sale on the Dutch W123 site. He is asking 100 Euros + shipping & handling. Figure freight will be another 80 Euros. http://groups.msn.com/mercedesw123/onderdelenronbisschops.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1659
Regarding the bumper, on the European wagons i think the hitch bolts on and the bumper bolts on to the hitch.

My wagon has a Da'Lan class II, square tube receiver hitch which was on the car when I bought it. I believe that the unit bolts under the bumper brackets and to the subframe stampings on each side of the fuel tank.

Da'Lan does not show a listing for the W123 wagon hitch, only the sedan and coupe. Maybe you could find one as NOS collecting dust at a hitch installer...

Correct. My '84 300TD-T Euro-wagon has the factory towing hitch option (Code 550- Trailer Coupling) and the hitch mounts onto the body, while the rear bumper mounts onto the L/R brackets of the hitch. That hitch is basically a single-piece of large heavy-duty horizontal tube...just like that photo...

If someone in the DC area is interested, I have what should be a complete hitch for a 300TD. It is a bag of loose parts right now, which is why someone from the DC area should stop by and we can test fit them to make sure that none are missing. My mom had a 300TD for ~20 years and they never had a reason to install the hitch, so it sat unused. Now the 300TD is gone and the hitch is in my garage.

PM or email me if you are interested.

-Tad
