Need Advice: Should i keep both diesels?

I purchased an 89 jetta diesel (NA) 5 speed with approx 170K miles on it last November. It runs well, but i saw the 83 CD in the paper and bought it because i wanted a mercedes. 83 300CD pics

So now i have 2 diesels. The insurance is only about $60 more for the year having both cars on .. so thats no issue. I was trying to sell the Jetta for $1200.. but i'm thinking about using that as a winter car so that the mercedes doens't have to endure it..also if i ever have to work on the benz i have another car to drive...

Think it's worth keeping the Jetta as a winter car and a backup?

yes, especially if you do your own work. In the long run, you'll save and enjoy more by having a backup vehicle. Life is too short as it is......

Say- you plan on ever addressing the rocker panel and jackhole rust I see in those photos? If you don't plan on fixing that rust, or at least treating it so that it doesn't grow, it kind of undermines the reason for keeping the VW so that you can keep the MB out of the winter. I'd get rid of the VW and just drive that Golf in the photo. FWD gassers are better in winter anyway. Gas is cheaper than diesel.
I see 123s driving around all shiny and clean, only to look at the rear fenderwells where the trunk drains are and see them all eaten up with rust. Or the same on the rockers. It's heartbreaking. It's like the owners refuse to acknowledge they've got a rust problem, are too inept or they are too lazy to do a little wirebrushing and slop some POR on it. So, the rust just keeps on keepin' on. Then the owner goes to sell the car and wants 7500 for it and wonders why nobody wants his rustbucket. You got to TREAT the rust people. Don't just let it go and hope it will disappear because it won't. It's kind of like when I was growing up and the dog **** on the carpet I would act like I didn't see it so that I wouldn't have to clean it up. It's kind of like that only different.
My apologies for hijacking the thread, weird mood today.

Working on it

I'm leaning towards keeping it... the other car in the pic is my brothers '01 GTI. I had an '01 wolfsburg with the 1.8T in it but was too expensive (over 3k in insurance!! ouch). And with my fiance picking up an 03 TDI .. i got the diesel bug...

No problem.. the rust is on my list of things to work on soon. I've got to finish the brakes ..safety first! Then the rust is next. I sprayed some rust protector / treatment on it when i first got the car to try to prevent any more damage. I know that the only thing that kills these cars is rust so i'm watching out for that.

Thanks for your time

If you have the space to park them without it being a big hassle, go for it.
You insurance might give you a multi-car discount, or a 'more vehicles than drivers' discount, which can reduce that bill even further.

It is really nice having multiple vehicles, especially when one or more is a classy older (or just downright old) car. I have a number of cars, and it's really nice heading out to a parking lot, and not seeing ANY car of that make/model except for mine.
As another benefit, if you do alot of driving, this will allow you to split the mileage between the two vehicles so they won't wear out as fast (not that it's an issue with those cars!)

...........oh, it's different all right. You can't really ignore a pile of dog $hit on the carpet, but ignoring rust on the rockers and the underbody is easy.

well when the pooch is a toy and has healthy bowels(ie not steamy soft serve but solid rabbit pellet) it's easier for a kid to ignore, actually it dries out quite nicely in a few hours and doesn't fill the house with stink
and when the pooch is your despised stepmother's animal that you throw your shoe at whenever you cross its path it's really easier for you to ignore
ain't my dog, ain't my problem, ain't no way I will pick up your dog's poop
tangential- anyone remember that mugger that threatened people with a dogpile at ATMs? It was on News of the Weird- apparently the perp threatened to make them eat the treat if they didn't hand over the cash
