Question Help to locate fuel filters 300D

I can find one easily; but does anyone have a pic or good description of where all the fuel filters are on my 85 300D-T?
I have tried looking in DIY listings and doing searches.
I am new to MB's and read there are more than 1....
Thanks; never a dumb question...........

Usually when describing a part location on a car/boat/aircraft left and right is determined in reference to the drivers location. (I know this is not THAT important, but)

So the fuel filter on the cars is located on the left side of the engine.
You may or may not have the inline filter. It is not installed by the factory, but became a normal installation at the dealer and is a good idea. It allows you to see contaminates quickly.

The photo is for a 240D but your car is identical in location and type of filter housing.
I was using a Wix filter to clean some algae out of the system. It was only used for 3 weeks. I do recommend the OEM filters. Hengst, Bosch Or Mercedes

You do have a filter, or screen in the fuel tank. Do a search on removal and cleaning.

My 300Sd 116, only has the big oil filter /water soearator.
So is it good to add another fuel inline filter?

When changing her, need to fill it with diesel and pump the primer till all the bubbles/air purges out.

The manual says change every 37,500 miles. What is the symptoms of clogged one? Engine does'nt want to rev up?

TIA

Remember that to change the main fuel filter, loosen the bolt in the centre of the housing before trying to spin off the filter.

The fuel filter will not come off using an oil filter wrench!

Install the new filter spin it up tight then tighten the bolt down to seal the filter mating faces.

Primer pump is in the first picture below. Unscrew it and extend it towards you then pump it. Do this while the fuel filter top bolt is slightly loose. Pump until the fuel has no air, or very little, and then lock it down by screwing it tight. If the shaft of the primer pump leaks you may want to consider getting a new one. They redesigned it.

Inline filters ( second picture, these are actually lawn mower fuel filters) are used on the vacuum system to see if the shutoff or vacuum pump are leaking oil. If you see black oil in the filters on the vacuum system you need to replace the component that is causing the leak. If the filter has fuel in it, it is the fuel inline filter. Notice the green hard line that the inline filter should be connected to. This fuel line continues to the Injection Pump via a rubber line. Place your inline fuel filter in that line, if you don't have one.

I use a fram inline filter. You can use the ones sold at Fastlane but I like a clear unit so I can see the condition of the fuel coming from the tank. Also the vacuum filters are just used to see if the units a leaking oil. this is a bad thing, it can ruin all the vacuum elements and cost some $$$, so its cheap insurance

Special wrench. What Tony was refering to was the oil filter wrenches that American cars use to remove the oil filter. The main fuel filter on a Mercedes is held on by the top bolt ( no special wrench needed) . The matting surface of the filter is just a flat Oring that seals the unit against the housing. so if the top bolt is loosened, just hold the top bolt steady and you can unscrew the filter. It is a good idea to fill the filter with fuel ( some people like to fill it with either diesel purge or Marvel Mystery Oil, or what ever they like) then install it. Filling it cuts down on the priming.
