Removing aluminium Alt bracket from engine??
OK,
I managed to crack the aluminium bracket that the alt pivots on and bolts to the engine block and am trying to remove it there appears to be 4 studs that come out of the block with nuts that secure the bracket. Well I removed the nuts and the bracket seems to be stuck fast to the block. Does anyone have any experience removing this bracket-is it ok to just pry it off with alot of force or is there some other attachment point to the block? Thanks |

four sounds
right. i looked in book and am fairly certain it is four. take a cold chisel and tap the joint between the bracket and block. use penetrating oil. these seldom are removed so they may be very difficult to get off. the chisel should work. you may have to whale on it. but the aluminum should give before the block so whale away.

Ok,
I just got of the phone with sun valley mercedes dismantlers,-apparently there are 7 bolts, the four obvious ones and two that are shared with the turbo support bracket and an allen head bolt on the front of the engine that can be accessed through a cut out in the balancer. Never would figured that out on my own! |

Turns out the dismantler’s directions were a little off. There are the four obvious studs on the side of the block and one bolt on the front behind the balancer just below the water pump pulley. There is very little room to work back there. The notch in the balancer only helps a little. In the end I had to remove the fan, fan pulley and shroud to get access, then heat and bend a sacrificial 12 point 17mm box end wrench grind it to clearance it and then apply a pair of vice grips to that in order to break the bolt free. There is not enough room for a wobble socket or even really a crows foot in there. I think the other bolts the dismantler was referring to were the ones that attach the alt to the bracket. Moral of the story, don’t over-tighten the alternator pivot bolt or you may crack your bracket and be stuck doing this job!
