Instrument Cluster Wires
once again i've searched but could not find.
my fellow BENZ drivers i am in need of a wire diagram for my instrument cluster (1986 300SDL). over the week end i took it apart because my speedometer keep bouncing around like a rabbit. my mechanic said i may need a new speedometer ($120). anyway, i've always had instrument lighting problems. i've tried a new cluster and still my lights would do the same thing. another Benz mechanic said most likely my wires are not going to the right places. would anyone here happen to have a diagram for the colorful wires that goes to the back of the instrument cluster? EXAMPLE: red wire goes to #19 blue wire goes to #12 |
help! please

I'm sure you saw my other post with the wiring diagram. The wires should be the same for your car. Please elaborate on the instrument lighting problems that you're experiencing.

Why would the wires go to the wrong places? About the most you can do is fit the big round connector incorrectly. The turn signals won't work properly if you get this connector wrong (don't ask how I know). Very obvious. If you have a problem with lighting, check the bulbs and the dimmer.
I can help you go wire by wire but that will take a while and I'm 99.9% sure you'll find everything in order. What kind of hack owned the car before you that makes you think the wires were rearranged? Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |
1. my left blinker arrow stays on as if it's the main light (no dash light)
2. when i want to turn right, no blinking from right arrow but the left arrow blinks (although it flashes correctly outside) 3. also i have about 3 (brake, battery, etc) sockets in my cluster without lights and no wires (visible) to place a bulb in when i removed the cluster i notice the tach had a piece broken off so i figured the previous owner did something but did not place each wire in their correct slots. so you think the diagram you posted should work for my 1986 300sdl? Hmm... my guess is that the round connector is off by a pin or two. When I made that mistake I blew the oil pressure gauge.
The warning lights under the triple gauge are wired through the board. Bulbs in twist sockets go right into the board. The warning lights under the tach are individually wired. There should be wire pairs ending in bulbs with a numbered tag to indicate which socket it goes into. I believe the warning lights you mentioned are under the triple gauge. dmon, email me directly at tabijan@yahoo.com and I'll see what I can do for you. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |
