low power 1983 300 sd

i have a 1983 300sd as my daily driver... and we drove it on an 8 hour
trip and it was slow down to about 45 mph on the interstate hills...
now we live in the mid west so real small hills...

i have never adjusted the valves....any ideas... could it be the fuel filter.

or could the injectors be cloged...

Start with the fuel filter. I had the same thing happen to me, and when I replaced the prefilter, I could not even blow air through the old one. I don't know what I got in the fuel, but it clogged the filter very effectively. I now always carry spare filters.

I would buy two sets, keep one as a spare just in case it happens again. It wouldn't hurt to adjust your valves sometime.

If the fuel filters don't cut it, then it's time to check boost from the turbo. You'll need a boost gauge and will have to drive the vehicle under maximum power at above 3000 rpm and read the gauge. So, it must be routed into the cabin, through the window for this test.

Sometimes the lines that send the manifold pressure signal to the ALDA (which adds more fuel) will get clogged with soot over time and need to be cleaned out.

also

might be a good idea to use injection cleaner and fungicide in the fuel.

(there fungi is getting to be almost as much fun as saying algae).

Cart's ahead of the horse. You don't need to consider a rebuilt turbo until it is determined whether you have proper boost or not.

There are quite a few threads on the issue of "no boost". It can be anything from a clogged overboost protection valve to a stuck wastegate on the turbo, but, it is rarely the turbo itself.

Hey,
You start by checking the banjo bolt here:
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/BanjoBolt

To adjust the turbo you need to add a T into the line between the Intake manifold and the overboost protection switch. Run a line from the T into the passenger compartment and put a boost gauge on it.
Run the car like Brian said and see how much boost pressure you get.

Adjust the Wastegate valve accordingly.

Plenty of info in the archives.

Also make sure your wastegate hose isn't leaking!
