Hello everyone,

I have a '82 300SD, 617 diesel engine. Today, We changed out the transmission shifter bushing and my leaky fuel line. After that is done, we lowered the car off the lift, started it, it ran well. I turned it off, the guy i was working with told me to start it up and let it run....I goto start it, and nothing! I put it in Neutral, nothing! I try every gear, nothing! So my buddy jumps 2 wires (red and the last wire on the dist. block) and the engine comes to life...goes throu all the gears fine. We turn it off, and I try at the key. NOTHING!

So, what do you think is the problem here? I mean all we did was change out a small bushing? Certainly this isnt the 617's achilles heal?

Sounds like you might have disturbed the neutral safety switch.

I had bought a Volvo once, the neutral starting switch was disconnected.
I had to hot wire , plug a wire from the starter terminal and jam it to the battery +ve. Just make sure the car is in Park.

The trouble of these cars the starter is very much obscured from view, where th sun dont shine at all.

Either the electrical connection to the neutral switch, or now with the bushing changes the switch isn't making in both neutral and park. But I'd check the connector first. make sure the plug seats on the contacts and the nylon cam lock on the switch engages the plug and then rotate it (CCW I think) to pull the plug in and lock it.
