As fuel prices increase so does ebay fuel economy

Here's a good one for suckers. 1976 300D - Ebay

Not only does the engine have one more cylinder but it has not one but TWO mileage ratings.

"With 45-50 miles to the gallon. You can't go wrong. "
"These Cars have been known to Get 28 to 35 miles per gallon"

Jeez, if you have to lie, just lie once don't do it several times in the same ad.

I would email them but it would be pointless. The solution is to get real information to the perspective buyers but that's difficult. I guess if you tell people things enough times they believe it. The hyperbolized "million miles", same fuel economy as a TDI??, 800 mile cruising range at 80mph etc.

Typical BS. I can't believe this seller has so much positive feedback. Sadly people seem to prefer lies over truth.

In all my dealings with eBay, I have learned one thing. The BS will never stop. #1 lesson, never assume anything! Check for yourself. Just because they don't have bad feedback, doesen't mean they are honest. Check feedback that the seller has left for others. If they only post good feedback AFTER the buyer posts good feedback you might want to think twice before buying.

I'm going to e-mail him right now and see what the response to that is....

this is my quickie to him:

There is no way the mercedes 240D that you were selling gets 40-50 mpg. Since that is an automatic it barely gets 32mpg. My 85 190D 5-speed gets 40mpg. I don't understand why some people on ebay have to lie to others. Have a nice day.

That's awesome, at least he knows he's lying his arse off. The response proves it.

I wonder if Dawg379 gets a better response

Hehe, the response that I got back was something to the effect that the 45-50 mpg was inadvertently left in the ad from a VW TDI that they had listed a week ago, oh and in response to my asking when the engine had been changed out from a 5 to a 6 and any documentation, well, oh he says yes it is a 5 cyl.

The car isn't that great anyway. Not as fabulous as described at least.

There is another Possibility

Some people don't realize that the ODO is turning slow, sticking, etc. When I bought my '84, I asked the guy twice about the ODO, he was sure that it was fine. I soon noticed that it was turning slow, and sticking intermitently.

I really think he thought he was being honest. When I pointed it out, he couldn't believe it, dropped his price a little.

Anyway, that could sure make you think you were getting great mileage.

I think thats the same guy that we almost bought a 240 manual from a little over two years ago. The car was in pretty nice shape, but we had an inspector go out and check it out after the auction and he found several dents, a rust spot,TORN CV AXLE BOOTS, and he said the steering felt pretty loose/clunky The car was definatley not in the condition as the seller described it. Good thing we called it off About two weeks later we won the bid on the 82SD and went to Harrisburg PA to get it.
