GP trouble shooting - another method
Just finished doing a trouble shoot on my lingering GP problem. You know the symptoms- no GP light, hard starting, etc. Resolution gets down to just a few areas. BTW - thanks for the stickies, and previous posts, they were very useful.
In my situation, I did not know if my GP relay (and/or fuse) were bad, or was it just the GP's? I tried another search on GP troubleshooting tips, but did not find a consice answer (perhaps I missed something). Anyway (hopefully), I came up with a 'shortcut' to narrow down the problem area. Next to the GP relay there is a 5 pin connector that contains the 5 wires that lead to each of the GP's. With the Ignition on, you can test (with a DVM)each of the 5 pins for DC voltage. If you get 12 V (or better) reading at each of the pins, then you can rule out both the GP relay and the GP 80Amp fuse as problems. That means that you only have a GP problem! From that point on just follow the related sticky! Five new GPs later problem solved!! Cheers |

Hey,
You can check those wires and the Glow Plugs at the same time. With engine off and multimeter set to read ohms put one end in a plug on that connector and the other on the battery negative (ground) terminal. If any read infinite replace glowplug. This has been discussed before, maybe you used GP instead of glowplug or glow plug in your search? Also, the Haynes manual has a pretty good writeup on this procedure. it says to use the 200 scale. The numbers should be pretty close to each other. If you see one with an unusually low number you may want to be proactive and replace it too. Danny

dannym,
Oops, I need to explain in more detail. I did find the method you described in the forum and I was going to use the method you described (it was my 1st choice) - but the cables on my (cheap) DVM were too short to reach the battery & the front 3 glow plugs That's why I tried my method (the cables would easily reach the GP's and the GP relay). And since it worked, I felt I should share it, just in case someone else tries to test their GP's and finds out that their multimeter cables are a bit short. Thanks for the feedback. |

That will work, but keep in mind that you don't need to use the battery negative (ground) terminal for this procedure, you can use the engine block, etc. as a ground point.
